Sm. 8vo., First Edition, eighteenth century inscription on title, title and several following leaves age-stained, title neatly mounted without loss of text, final leaf of Appendix mounted with loss of half text; strongly and attractively bound in half calf, marbled boards, back with five flat gilt bands, second compartment with red leather label lettered and ruled in gilt, a most attractive copy. This copy was formerly in the McIntosh Library, Dunkeld, and carries the MS press-mark A8.51 and bookplate (numbered 493) on front paste-down. A sound and complete (save last leaf) copy of the first dedicated published account of Orkney and Zetland. RARE. Anderson, p.402.

Bray's classic account was first published as three volumes in 1836. Urged by Southey to report 'everything about a parish that can be made interesting; all of its history, traditions and manners that can be saved from oblivion', she produced a classic and important work combining natural history, topography and folklore in a series of delightful letters. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR WITH HIS FADED (BUT ENTIRELY LEGIBLE) SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. Uncommon standard reference. Designed and built by the Adam brothers in the late eighteenth century, London's elegant Adelphi quarter was popular with major literary figures including Johnson, Dickens, Voltaire and many others. A representative section remains near Charing Cross station, but the majority was demolished in the 1930s to make way for the broadening of the Thames Embankment. A second edition was issued by Unwin in the following year.
