FRIEDMAN Norman
British Destroyers and Frigates. The Second World War and later. Ship Plans by A D Baker III. With additional Drawings by Alan Raven. NEAR FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER
Chatham,, [2006]. Roy. 4to., First Edition, with very numerous photographs and illustrations throughout; blue cloth, gilt back, a fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. The first major study of RN destroyers in forty years, and the first ever of the smaller escorts, this book is a landmark contribution to the history of British warships. Beginning with the radically different 'Tribal' class of 1936, it traces the development of destroyers, sloops, frigates and corvettes through the post-war era, in which these traditional categories began to blur, culminating in Type 45 - the biggest 'destroyers' ever built for the Royal Navy. Highly recommended.

FUCHIDA Mitsuo
Midway. The Battle that doomed Japan. Foreword by Professor Michael Lewis. [Introduction by Admiral Kondo. Translation by M. Chihaya. Edited from the Japanese edition by C.H. Kawakami and R. Pineau]. [First UK Edition]. FIRST UK EDITION IN FULL MOROCCO
Hutchinson,, [1957]. 8vo., First Edition thus, with 49 plates on 16, several maps and charts in the text and endpaper maps; handsomely bound in full dark green crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, gilt top, hand-made endpapers, ribbon marker, an elegant copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. The standard account from the Japanese perspective and a classic of WWII. One of the foremost figures in the IJNAF, Mitsuo Fuchida was strike force commander at Pearl Harbor. Unable to take part in operations at Midway due to a recent appendix operation he watched the action from the deck of the flagship, taking notes as events unfolded. Subsequently, he was one of the few Japanese naval officers permitted to study the reports of the battle and is therefore uniquely qualified to deliver this account. For the first US edition (published for USNI) the Japanese original was translated into English by Commander Chihaya and edited by Kawakami and Pineau; their text is repeated here. Importantly, the Japanese photographs (although of poorer quality) are retained, and supplemented by a small number of well-chosen USN pictures. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Albion, p.297; Enser, p. 515.

FUKUI SHIZUO
Japanese Naval Vessels Survived. Their Post-War Activities and Final Disposition. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY IN PUBLISHER'S SLIP-CASE
Shuppan Kyodo Publishers, Tokyo,, 1961. 4to., First Edition, text entirely in Japanese, skeleton picture captions in English, with very numerous photographs and illustrations throughout; original blue boards, blue cloth back, upper board lettered in gilt in English, backstrip lettered in gilt in Japanese, brown silk marker, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the whole housed in the publisher's original card slip-case, the case mildly worn and frayed at extremities. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO ANTHONY PAVIA WITH THE FORMER'S SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. With the publisher's separately printed slip giving the context of the work, and the original bilingual price slip. The publisher's note makes it clear that this work, although the first to appear in print, was conceived as the third volume of a projected three-volume series 'Survey on the Japanese Naval Vessels 1925-1947'. It seems unlikely, however, that any further volumes were published and that this volume therefore stands alone; CERTAINLY IT CONSTITUTES THE FINEST PUBLISHED COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF ITS TYPE. Constructor Lieutenant-Commander Shizuo Fukui (1913-1993), Imperial Japanese Navy, was one of the world's foremost experts on ship design and naval construction. He was the author of some fourteen books and numerous magazine articles, which form collectively the definitive photographic record of the IJN. His wartime appointments ranged from the HQ of the Combined Fleet to the Navy Technical Institute; he ended his service career as Chief Officer and Director of Naval Construction at one of the major naval shipyards. After the war he devoted himself to historical research and made a lifelong contribution to the preservation of the records of ships of the Imperial Navy. His private library eventually contained over 20,000 photos, most of them unique, of which the great majority remains unpublished. Anthony Pavia was the owner of an archive of related photographs which it is believed found a home in the UK after Pavia's death. We are indebted to Mr. Robin Bursell for the information on Anthony Pavia. SIGNED COPIES OF ANY WORK BY FUKUI ARE RARE.
