Familiar Wild Flowers. First [-Seventh Series]. [Complete set]. SPLENDID SET WITH ORIGINAL TISSUE GUARDS
"Cassell, 1902" "7 series in 4 vols., 8vo., with 4 coloured frontispieces (original tissue guards present), 279 fine coloured plates (all original tissue guards present) and numerous monochrome line illustrations in the text, neat uniform signature on front paste-downs, free endpapers very lightly browned; publisher's dark red cloth, gilt backs, sprinkled edges, joints lightly rubbed, backstrips lightly pulled at heads, a very good, remarkably bright, clean set in contemporary binding. Hulme's classic flora was first published in five volumes between 1877 and 1885. The quality and charm of the plates together with a more than usually informative letterpress (including much botanical, philological and herbal matter) made the work an immediate success and it was several times reissued in various formats. In the present set the series are grouped as follows: Vol. I: First Series; Vol. II: Second and Third Series; Vol. III: Fourth and Fifth Series; Vol. IV: Sixth and Seventh Series. The Seventh Series includes overall indexes of English names and botanical names, and a table of botanical orders and genera represented in the work. In the fourth volume the case is shaken between the Sixth and Seventh Series but the sewing and binding is perfectly sound. Although the bindings show some signs of use (as one might hope, perhaps) this is a lovely set in remarkably bright, clean state. The plates and their guards, in particular, are crisp and virtually spotless. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Freeman 1822."
