Devantures Et Installations de Magasins: Complete Set of 48 Prints
Paris, France, Editions D'Art Charles Moreau. 1927. Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Ill.: Various Photographers. Publication year based on Google Books information for this collection. This is a folio with hardcover boards holding 48 B&W loose plates which are photographs apparently printed using an aquatint photogravure method. The overall size of the plates is 12 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches [32.4 x 25 cm] The folio has paper covered boards, a cloth spine, held together with the original satin ribbon ties which are showing some age discoloration. Front board mostly clean [mild foxing stains]. Back board with more discolorations and moisture marks at top and bottom edges. All edges with a little shelf wear. Previous owner's book plate at endpaper. The condition of the plates ranges from near fine to very good-. All are intact, no tears, no creases, a few with small, mild corner bends. A few have minor foxing, some [about 15] with more obvious foxing but is mostly limited to the borders. The plates are printed photographs of Art Deco shop fronts and interiors in Paris, France. They include clothing stores, official buildings, car dealers, shoe stores, pharmacies and many others. Text is in French. The folio includes a four-page brochure in near fine condition with an introduction by R. H. and a numbered list of the plates with the name, location, and the architect of the businesses. The dust wrapper described as near fine- refers to the black blind-embossed French-style wrappers with tipped-on color [tinted] front cover label over boards. The black wrappers have a little edge wear and the spine has mild creases. These wraps are protected by semi transparent glassine covers and those are only in fair to poor condition due to age discolorations, tears and wrinkles mostly to front wraps which have a light pink paste-on label [see photos] with the words Painter Paragons printed in dark pink. Illustrated with 76 B&W photogravures [héliogravures] some with more than one image which represent the range of French nude photography in the late 19th century. Most notable is the fact that while underarm hair, considered fashionable at that time, is prominently displayed while pubic hair has been eliminated in all full frontal nudity photos [via retouching?] Textblock pages [81 including index of plates and brief bibliography] clean, unmarked, sewn binding sound; some discoloration from black wrappers at feps. Text in French [eight pages by Marces Bovis and two by François Saint-Julien]. One page in English laid in with the title "Painters Paragons or the Imaginary Harem": [an] English resume by Willa Percival, first published in the magazine "Infinity" New York.
