No Place, No Publisher. 1901. Soft cover. Book, [ca. 1901]. 15pp. 8vo/23.5cm. Pamphlet bound, lower right front corner chewed, text not affected, otherwise clean and very good. An address recounting the history and development of the Illinois Central Railroad from its founding in 1851 to 1901. Stuyvesant Fish (1851-1923) of New York City, was President of the Illinois Central Railroad from 1887 to 1906. This pamphlet was recovered from the house of his assistant, Charles H. Wenham (1868-1951) at the corner of Park Place and Brooklyn Avenue, Brooklyn NY about 1964. After Stuyvesant Fish left the railroad in 1906, Wenham became his assistant and after Fish died in 1923 Wenman continued as an employee of the Fish family until the 1940s.. Very Good.

A summary description usually with maps and photographs of the main features of each of fifty or so underground transportation systems in major cities of the world as they existed in the early sixties. Frederick Henry Howson (1904- ) was an acknowledged authority on transportation systems and wrote several authoritative books on them, particularly those in his home country, England.. Fine.

Tan and brown cloth gilt, no noticeable wear, in chipped dj, internally clean, tight and very good. Signature of author on ffep. Laid in is a publicity flyer with a photograph of The Campbell Apartment with five paragraphs of text about it from the author's book. In recent years this space, once an apartment above the Terminal occupied by the tycoon John C. Campbell has functioned as a posh bar. In the forties a highly popular and absorbing collection of stories about the beneath the surface and behind the scenes working of this most popular of all American railroad stations. David Marshall (1899- ) then a journalist with the New York Sun but more importantly a rail buff who had authored the book, "Model Railroad Engineering", spent years interviewing all sorts of people to get their stories. Very Good.
