"During World War II, Operation Grenade was the crossing of the Roer river between Roermond and Düren by the U. S. Ninth Army, commanded by Lieutenant General William Hood Simpson, in February 1945, which marked the beginning of the Allied invasion of Germany. On 9 February, the U. S. Ninth Army—operating under Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery's Anglo-Canadian 21st Army Group since the Battle of the Bulge—was to cross the Roer and link up with the Canadian First Army, under Lieutenant-General Harry Crerar, coming from the Nijmegen area of the Netherlands in Operation Veritable, which had started at 05: 00 on 8 February. However, once the Canadians had advanced, the Germans opened the sluice gates of upstream dams (Rur Dam and Urft Dam). This stopped the Americans from crossing as planned. It had been anticipated that the Germans would try to do this, and that General Omar Bradley's U. S. 12th Army Group could capture them in time to stop the flooding. " (from Wikipedia). The German Generalplan Ost aimed to use some of the conquered people as forced labour for the Axis war effort while acquiring the oil reserves of the Caucasus as well as the agricultural resources of various Soviet territories, including Ukraine and Byelorussia. Their ultimate goal was to create more Lebensraum (living space) for Germany, and the eventual extermination of the native Slavic peoples by mass deportation to Siberia, Germanisation, enslavement, and genocide." "Lee worked through China and Japan for over two years, traveling thousands of miles with the Jap armies. Jap Army officers did not care for his hard-hitting news stories, but they liked him well enough to warn him to get out of Shanghai three weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Lee ended up on Bataan with General MacArthur, and his eyewitness stories were good reporting. He left before Corregidor’s fall “to save my neck. ” He had heard that Don Bell, an American radio commentator, had been tortured and killed by the Japs in Manila, and assumed he would meet the same fate. He also thought that he and TIME’S Melville Jacoby, who was later killed in Australia, might be able to persuade Washington that the Philippines could be saved with some prompt assistance. Initially, the 7th Ferrying Group, Ferrying Command, United States Army Air Corps (later Air Transport Command) at Gore Field (Great Falls Municipal Airport) was ordered to organize and develop an air route to send assistance to the Soviet Union through Northern Canada, across Alaska and the Bering Sea to Siberia, and eventually over to the Eastern Front. The US-Canadian Permanent Joint Board on Defense decided in the autumn of 1940 that a string of airports should be constructed at Canadian expense between the city of Edmonton in central Alberta and the Alaska-Yukon border. Late in 1941 the Canadian government reported that rough landing fields had been completed." (from Wikipedia); Signed by Author. Near Fine .
