DEBEAUFORT, J. M. (COUNT VAN MAURIK DE BEAUFORT), Behind the German Veil a Record of a Journalistic War Pilgrimage
DEBEAUFORT, J. M. (COUNT VAN MAURIK DE BEAUFORT)
Behind the German Veil a Record of a Journalistic War Pilgrimage
New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1918. 8th Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; US trade edition. This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is sunning and fading to spots on the book covers along with a bit of light edge wear and rubbing. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name on the front endpaper. "In the following chapters I have tried to record my impressions, observations, interviews and adventures on a somewhat extensive journalistic pilgrimage through Germany in war-time." "Since he habitually wore a top hat, monocle and spats, he became known as The Dude Reporter. He also appeared in newspaper stories himself, the stories often involving altercations of one sort or another. He went to Europe to cover the war, saying he was working for the British newspapaer Daily Telegraph, but he was also working for Hearst and INS. His stories came from within Germany, which certainly would have forbidden a correspondent from a British newspaper to enter, and their tone in the Hearst papers in 1915 is remarkably more neutral than the writing in his book Behind the German Veil, published in Britain in 1916 and in the United States after America entered the war. Even if de Beaufort was a con man and swindler, his book is well-written, very entertaining and sometimes informative.". Very Good .

"His academic career was interrupted by two years (1915 and 1916) spent in Brussels as director of Hoover's humanitarian American Commission for Relief in Belgium. Initially a pacifist, Kellogg dined with the officers of the German Supreme Command. He became shocked by the grotesque Social Darwinist motivation for the German war machine - the creed of survival of the fittest based on violent and fatal competitive struggle is the Gospel of the German intellectuals. Kellogg decided these ideas could only be beaten by force and, using his connections with America's political elite, began to campaign for American intervention in the war. He published an account of his conversations in the book Headquarters Nights." (from WIkipedia). Very Good+ .

It was certainly well established during the nineteenth century, but is particularly associated with World War I. It can be used as a term of reference, or as a form of address. German soldiers would call out to "Tommy" across no man's land if they wished to speak to a British soldier. French and Commonwealth troops would also call British soldiers "Tommies". In more recent times, the term Tommy Atkins has been used less frequently, although the name "Tom" is occasionally still heard; private soldiers in the British Army's Parachute Regiment are still referred to as "Toms". "But because women were paid less than men, there was a worry that employers would continue to employ women in these jobs even when the men returned from the war. This did not happen; either the women were sacked to make way for the returning soldiers or women remained working alongside men but at lower wage rates. But even before the end of the war, many women refused to accept lower pay for what in most cases was the same work as had been done previously by men. The women workers on London buses and trams went on strike in 1918 to demand the same increase in pay (war bonus) as men. The strike spread to other towns in the South East and to the London Underground. This was the first equal pay strike in the UK which was initiated, led and ultimately won by women.".
