Some Note on Wood Engraving

Grenock, Scotland: The Signet Press, 1961. Limited Edition. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; This booklet is limited to approx. 350 copies, this is copy 371 of the paper copies. This is a smaller than trade sized booklet. The booklet is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book covers have some light bumping and rubbing to the spine ends and corners. The text pages are clean and bright. "Bewick did not flourish at schoolwork, but at a very early age showed a talent for drawing. He had no lessons in art. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, an engraver in Newcastle, where he learnt how to engrave on wood and metal, for example marking jewellery and cutlery with family names and coats of arms. In Beilby's workshop Bewick engraved a series of diagrams on wood for Charles Hutton, illustrating a treatise on measurement. He seems thereafter to have devoted himself entirely to engraving on wood, and in 1775 he received a prize from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce for a wood engraving of the "Huntsman and the Old Hound" from Select Fables by the late Mr Gay, which he was illustrating. In 1776 Bewick became a partner in Beilby's workshop. The joint business prospered, becoming Newcastle's leading engraving service with an enviable reputation for high-quality work and good service. In September 1776 he went to London for eight months, finding the city rude, deceitful and cruel, and much disliking the unfairness of extreme wealth and poverty side by side. He returned to his beloved Newcastle as soon as he could, but his time in the capital gave him a wider reputation, business experience, and an awareness of new movements in art. " (from Wikipedia). B&W Illustrations; This is a thin stringbound pamphlet with plain paper covers - undated, but c1880's. This pamphlet is in Fair condition. The front cover is detached but present - the rear cover (and last text page) are missing. All edges of the pamphlet have edge wear, rubbing and nicking. There is noticeable toning and foxing throughout. The pamphlet details the basics fo fret sawing and wood carving, from the tools needed, to simple shapes, to more complex work, including marquetry and finishing. Also included are the instructions for setting up and using a 'Holly Saw" which is treadle run.. Fair .

There are a couple of very shallow nicks / chips to all edges of the booklet covers. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's math problems on the rear endpaper . The front cover has a lovely woodcut illustration signed (? Eldred) Mowery.. Very Good .

Elmhurst, IL: A. Neely Hall, 1920. Other. B&W Illustrations; This is a folded craft pattern for a Garden Gazebo made from one large sheet, folded several times to create a booklet. The pattern is in Very Good+ condition. There are some light spots of ground-in finger dirt and a bit of edge wear. "Albert Neely Hall was born in Chicago in 1883, graduated from Lewis Institute in 1901 and Chicago School of Architecture in 1902. He and his wife, Bertha Cassidy Hall, moved to their home at 177 E. St. Charles Road in Elmhurst in 1916. Hall was an accomplished craftsman. He wrote a syndicated column that ran in newspapers across the country. He also contributed to magazines. In the December 1911 issue of Delineator he wrote an article titled "Christmas Gifts You Can Make in Your Workshop," suggesting a key-board, a necktie-rack, a spool rack, and a sleeve board. As Hall wrote, "useful, home-made Christmas gifts, bound to last for a year at least, and the cost of all combined will not exceed a dollar at the most." " (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .
