" (Ruth) McGinnis stated playing pool at the aged 7 in her father's barbershop pool hall on South Main Street in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. She was a prodigious player at a young age, making a run of 47 at the age of about 10. She was the captain of the varsity basketball team that won the Pennsylvania state championship in 1928. McGinnis scored 36 points in one game, and 341 across the 15 games in the series. In 1943, she completed training as a physical education teacher at Teachers' College. Whilst at Stroudsburg, she participated in a number of sports, including soccer, golf, softball and field hockey. She also served as a lifeguard, and is said to have saved a man from drowning. McGinnis found it difficult to secure a teaching post after leaving Stroudsburg, and joined a programme called "Better Billiards," organised by the National Billiards Council of America, which sponsored McGinnis to visit pool halls and promote pool. The visits usually involved her giving a short talk, demonstrating some trick shots, and playing against representatives of the venue. She travelled around 28,000 miles a year, and over 200,000 miles in less than ten years." (from Wikipedia). Good .

SAN JOSE BEES, San Jose Bees 1974 Official Program & Yearbook
SAN JOSE BEES
San Jose Bees 1974 Official Program & Yearbook
San Jose, CA: San Jose Bees, 1974. Paperback. This is an oversized paperback book / program (and yearbook). The book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and wear. The book covers -both front and rear - have a previous owner's inked mathematics and numbers scribbled all over. The text pages are clean and bright, with the exception of one advert clipped from the bottom edge of page 23/24. The stats page has NOT been filled in. "San Jose has hosted multiple minor league baseball teams throughout its history. The current lineage can be traced back to the San Jose Bees who joined the California League in 1962 as an affiliate of the expansion Los Angeles Angels. They switched to a Kansas City Royals affiliate from 1970–1974 and a Cleveland Indians affiliate in 1975–1976. Many players on the Kansas City Royals teams of the 1970s and 1980s, including George Brett, Amos Otis, and Dennis Leonard played in San Jose. The Sacramento Solons then leased the San Jose affiliate for two seasons, when they were known as the San Jose Missions and played in the Pacific Coast League as an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners. In 1982 the club became affiliated with the Montreal Expos and was known as the San Jose Expos. The Expos ended their affiliation after one year and the renamed Bees became an independent club. As an independent club, the Bees were free to sign players from Nippon Professional Baseball; the Seibu Lions sent several players to the Bees on loan in this period including Norio Tanabe and Kimiyasu Kudo. The 1986 Bees employed five decorated former Major Leaguers who struggled with drugs and alcohol and were effectively blacklisted by Major League Baseball: Steve Howe, Mike Norris, Ken Reitz, Todd Cruz and Daryl Sconiers. The mix of disgraced former stars and Japanese imports attracted attention from such publications as The Times, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times. DUROCHER, LEO, Playing the Giants Game (New York Giants)
DUROCHER, LEO
Playing the Giants Game (New York Giants)
New York, NY: National Exhibition Co, 1949. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; This is a smaller than trade sized booklet (approx. 6" x 4") with illustrated covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The covers of the book have some light fading, especially to the spine joints. There is some light bumping and wear to the spine ends and corners. The text pages are clean and bright. According to Worldcat there are only three copies of this booklet in libraries. "Durocher returned for the 1948 season, but his outspoken personality and a 35-37 start again caused friction with Rickey, and on July 16 Durocher, Rickey and New York Giants owner Horace Stoneham negotiated a deal whereby Durocher was let out of his Brooklyn contract to take over the Dodgers' cross-town rivals. He enjoyed perhaps his greatest success with the Giants, and possibly a measure of sweet revenge against the Dodgers, as the Giants won the 1951 NL pennant in a playoff against Brooklyn, ultimately triumphing on Bobby Thomson's historic game-winning "Shot 'Heard 'Round The World" home run. Later with the Giants in 1954, Durocher won his only World Series championship as a manager by sweeping the heavily favored Cleveland Indians, who posted the highest American League winning percentage of all time (111–43) during the regular season. ETTIN, ERWIN D. (EDITOR)
Philip Morris 1953 Football Schedule 1953 College and Professional Schedules - Statistics - Features - Information Guide
New York, NY: The Woodrow Press, Inc, 1953. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; This is a small format booklet (approx. 5" x 3") with illustrated covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Very Good- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The booklet covers have some finger wear and light wrinkling. The covers have some light fading. The text pages are generally clean and bright, but there is some light underlining on two facing pages for the 1952 All American page. "From 1933 to 1974, when he retired to sail and golf, Roventini, or “little Johnny, ” was a living trademark for Philip Morris cigarettes. He appeared throughout the country in person, on billboards, in magazines and on radio and television dressed in his signature red usher’s jacket, striped trousers, black pillbox hat and white gloves. He made his famous call more than 1 million times, intoning it officially for the last time in 1974 to open the company’s operations center in Richmond, Va. Johnny’s well-known uniform, inspired by a 1919 poster of a bellboy, is now in the American Ad Museum in Portland, Ore. The stand-up collar of the jacket became a fashion classic that endures today, known in design circles as a “Johnny collar. ”Born to Italian immigrant parents, Roventini got a job as a bellboy at the Hotel New Yorker and earned minor fame when the hotel put his picture on postcards. He was identified as “the smallest bellboy in the world. ”When advertising agency president Milton Biow came up with the idea of having his cigarette paged as if it were a man, he stopped by New York’s Commodore Hotel and asked for the best bellhop in town. He was sent to the Hotel New Yorker and spied Johnny. Biow gave him a dollar and told the naive youth to page Mr. Philip Morris." (from the Los Angeles times death notices for Dec. 3, 1998). FLEMING, PEGGY (WITH PETER KAMINSKY), The Long Program Skating Towards Life's Victories
FLEMING, PEGGY (WITH PETER KAMINSKY)
The Long Program Skating Towards Life's Victories
New York, NY: Pocket Books, 1999. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; SIGNED EDITION. This copy has been signed, with an inscription, on the title page. The book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. There is a small bump to the bottom spine end of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is in mostly clean condition, but has a small semi-closed tear to the top front panel, along with some light rubbing and wear to the top front flap joint. "Fleming's mother selected a color for her Grenoble skating costume, chartreuse, named after the liqueur of that color produced by neighboring Carthusians in their founding monastery, which also gives the name "chartreuse" to the region, thereby perhaps inspiring local French audience support for Peggy's virtually flawless performance. Her award in Grenoble was singularly important for the American athletes and the nation as a whole, for this was the only gold medal that the U. S. Olympic team won in the 1968 Winter Olympics. It signaled a return to American dominance in the sport of women's figure skating following the unprecedented tragedy of the 1961 Sabena plane crash. " (from Wikipedia) ; Signed by Author. GUNBY, R A, Sport Parachuting Handbook the 1970's Textbook of Sport Parachuting
GUNBY, R A
Sport Parachuting Handbook the 1970's Textbook of Sport Parachuting
Monterey, CA: Alma F. Gunby, 1969. 4th Printing. Paperback. B&W Illustrations; This is a trade paperback book with illustrated cardstock covers and a glued spine. The book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked gift notation on the front inside cover of the book. "Russ Gunby joined the US Army in 1940 and made his first jump in 1944 after trying for 3 years to get accepted into jump school. At the time, US Army regulations forbade soldiers from jumping outside of military operations jumps. Gunby disliked this rule and worked to get it changed. He did unofficial jumps, breaking the rules, by using surplus equipment and hiring a pilot for $50. He also founded the parachute club at Ft Ord, CA.... Russ Gunby, C-350, was the first skydiving instructor in the US and conducted the first Instructor's course in 1959 in Phoenix, AZ. He also established the Area Safety Officer (now S&TA) and the Conference (now Region) method of representation. Russ Gunby wrote a book called "Sport Parachuting - a basic handbook of sport parachuting" in 1960 when at age 38 while still in the Army. He mortgaged his home to produce the first printing. Later printings were underwritten by Jeppesen. More than 80,000 copies were sold. Gunby says of "Sport Parachuting" ... "In the beginning the book filled the void in the absence of knowledgable instructors. Today it's used to augment and reinforce student instruction, and that's good. It has done much more than I originally anticipated." (Parachuting History website). Very Good .
