Philosophy Is No Mystery Peasants Put Their Study to Work
Peking, China: Foreign Lang. Press, 1972. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Stapled wraps. This is a smaller than trade sized booklet with illustrated covers and a glued spine. The booklet is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There is a tear to the top spine end of the book cover. The book covers are clean and bright. The text pages are clean and bright. This booklet discusses the philosophy of Maoism and how it will liberate the peasantry. "Maoism, officially Mao Zedong Thought, [a] is a variety of Marxism–Leninism that Mao Zedong developed while trying to realize a socialist revolution in the agricultural, pre-industrial society of the Republic of China and later the People's Republic of China. A difference between Maoism and traditional Marxism–Leninism is that a united front of progressive forces in class society would lead the revolutionary vanguard in pre-industrial societies rather than communist revolutionaries alone. This theory, in which revolutionary praxis is primary and ideological orthodoxy is secondary, represents urban Marxism–Leninism adapted to pre-industrial China." (from Wikipedia). Very Good .

PUNCH (JERROLD, DOUGLAS WILLIAM), Mrs. Caudle's Curtain Lectures
PUNCH (JERROLD, DOUGLAS WILLIAM)
Mrs. Caudle's Curtain Lectures
Hartford, CT: S. Andrus & Son, 1954. Early American Printing. Hardcover. This book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light edge wear, nicking and beginning fraying. The top spine end has chipped mostly away. The text pages are generally clean and bright. There are two previous owner's bookplates (Johnson Brigham and LeRoy V. Brant) . The front endpaper includes an inked previous owner's name. "Douglas William Jerrold (London 3 January 1803 – 8 June 1857 London) was an English dramatist and writer. " Douglas Jerrold is now perhaps better known from his reputation as a brilliant wit in conversation than from his writings. As a dramatist he was very popular, though his plays have not kept the stage. He dealt with rather humbler forms of social world than had commonly been represented on the boards. He was one of the first and certainly one of the most successful of the men who in defence of the native English drama endeavoured to stem the tide of translation from the French, which threatened early in the 19th century to drown original native talent. His skill in construction and his mastery of epigram and brilliant dialogue are well exemplified in his comedy, Time Works Wonders (Haymarket, 26 April 1845). The tales and sketches which form the bulk of Jerrold's collected works vary much in skill and interest; but, although there are evident traces of their having been composed from week to week, they are always marked by keen satirical observation and pungent wit." (from Wikipedia) "First published in Punch in 1845, this book gives Mrs Caudle's incessant petty lectures to her unfortunate husband - enacted in the matrimonial bed at the close of each day when he is compelled to lie and listen. In Mrs Caudle's eyes he can do no right and she lays the blame for all their ills squarely at his feet. Mrs Caudle is adept at inconsistency and her melodramatic talent for turning molehills into mountains means her husband's most innocent acts - from eating out to lending an umbrella - are construed as monstrous deeds that will surely lead their whole family to death and damnation. " (from Goodreads). Very Good .

EDITORS OF RAMPARTS (INTRODUCTION BY MARSHALL SINGER), Conversations with the New Reality Readings in the Cultural Revolution
EDITORS OF RAMPARTS (INTRODUCTION BY MARSHALL SINGER)
Conversations with the New Reality Readings in the Cultural Revolution
San Francisco, CA: Canfield Press/ Harper & Row, 1971. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Paperback. B&W Illustrations; This is a trade paperback book with heavy cardstock covers and a glued spine. The book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The front cover of the book has noticeable fading in splotches. The text pages are clean and bright. "As its title suggests, this book is an attempt to characterize the growth, development, and consequences of that ongoing phenomenon we call the Cultural Revolution, to stand back for a moment and engage in a series of conversations with the forces that are sweeping over the entire nation and seemingly changing its manners and mores." "Ramparts was a glossy illustrated American political and literary magazine, published from 1962 to 1975 and closely associated with the New Left political movement. Unlike most of the radical magazines of the day, Ramparts was expensively produced and graphically sophisticated. Ramparts was established in June 1962 by Edward M. Keating in Menlo Park, California, as a "showcase for the creative writer and as a forum for the mature American Catholic." The magazine declared its intent to publish "fiction, poetry, art, criticism and essays of distinction, reflecting those positive principles of the Hellenic-Christian tradition which have shaped and sustained our civilization for the past two thousand years, and which are needed still to guide us in an age grown increasingly secular, bewildered, and afraid.". REYNOLDS, STEPHEN MARION, The Story of Barney Nolan
REYNOLDS, STEPHEN MARION
The Story of Barney Nolan
Chicago, IL: Anti-Capital Punishment Society of America, 1909. Pamphlet. C1909. There is mention in Worldcat to a Barney Nolan -- but no reference to this pamphlet itself. This is a young adult short story written by Stephen Marion Reynolds, as a harangue against the newly revived death penalty. Stephen Marion Reynolds was a friend (and a somewhat biographer) of Eugene V. Debs. The pamphlet is in Fair only condition, with the front cover present, but detached, and the rear (plain) cover missing completely. The cover is noticeably foxed. The pamphlet is numbered pages 5-12. It is possible that a title page / copyright page is missing, and from the fact that page 12 ends in the middle of a sentence, that there is at least one more page to the pamphlet that is missing. The story itself is complete -- page 12 gives a postscript to the story which explains the story based on the philosophy of anti-capital punishment. "These are the expressions of a few of the thoughtful men of the world who have denied the right of the state to kill under any pretext whatever. Society is subject to the commandments and the law as much as is the individual..." Though incomplete, this item may be the only copy extent.. Fair .

Pig, was a 145-pound (66 kg) domestic pig that was nominated for President of the United States as a theatrical gesture by the Youth International Party on August 23, 1968, just before the opening of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois. The youth-oriented party (whose members were commonly called "Yippies") was an anti-establishment and countercultural revolutionary group whose views were inspired by the free speech and anti-war movements of the 1960s, mainly the opposition to United States involvement in the Vietnam War. Yippies were known for using dramatic theatrics in their demonstrations, and they used Pigasus as a way to mock the social status quo. At a rally announcing his candidacy, Pigasus was confiscated by Chicago policemen and several of his Yippie backers were arrested for disorderly conduct" (from Wikipedia). Very Good- .
