MILLS, OGDEN L. (OGDEN LIVINGSTON), Evolution with an "R"
MILLS, OGDEN L. (OGDEN LIVINGSTON)
Evolution with an "R"
New York, NY: The Association of New York State Young Republican Clubs, 1934. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Stapled wraps. This is a trade sized booklet with self covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There are several small spots of foxing to the covers, and there is toning to the spine. The text pages are clean and bright. This is an address "Given before the Annual Meeting of the Association of New York State Young Republican Clubs" "The most powerful of FDR’s conservative opponents eventually came together as the American Liberty League. Prominent industrialists and financiers formed the Liberty League in August of 1934. Democrats such as 1924 presidential nominee John W. Davis, 1928 presidential nominee Alfred Smith, and former party chairman John J. Raskob joined corporate leaders such as Alfred P. Sloan of General Motors, the DuPont family, and others to oppose the administration in advance of the year’s congressional elections. At its height, the League claimed 125,000 members. The Liberty League attacked the New Deal as a socialistic experiment. The group railed against “regimentation” and supposed attacks upon individual liberties. Some accused Roosevelt of harboring dictatorial ambitions. League rhetoric won few friends within the general public. Herbert Hoover refused to join, though he nonetheless bitterly opposed Roosevelt. The League’s posturing in advance of the 1936 presidential election provided FDR’s campaign plenty of fodder for its attempts to portray their man as the ally of ordinary Americans. Politically ineffective, most Liberty Leaguers had to content themselves with simple rage against New Deal policies and personalities. Many wealthy critics labeled Roosevelt a “traitor to his class. ” " (Univ. Of North Texas website). Very Good+ .

Most participants were elite members of the business and academic communities in their respective countries. President Jimmy Carter to attempt the rescue of 53 embassy staff held captive at the Embassy of the United States, Tehran, on 24 April 1980. The operation, one of Delta Force's first, encountered many obstacles and failures and was subsequently aborted. Eight helicopters were sent to the first staging area called Desert One, but only five arrived in operational condition. One had encountered hydraulic problems, another was caught in a sand storm, and the third showed signs of a cracked rotor blade. During the operational planning, it was decided that the mission would be aborted if fewer than six helicopters remained operational upon arrival at the Desert One site, despite only four being absolutely necessary. In a move that is still discussed in military circles, the field commanders advised President Carter to abort the mission, which he did." (from Wikipedia). Very Good in Very Good dust jacket .

The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is mostly crisp and clean, but has an inch + tear to the top front edge. There is a previous owner's penciled notation on the front endpaper. "The John Birch Society from its start opposed collectivism as a "cancer" and by extension communism and big government. Allegations that so-called "Insiders" have conspired to control the United States through communism and world government are a recurring theme of JBS publications. The organization and its founder, Robert W. Welch Jr, promoted Americanism as "the philosophical antithesis of Communism." It contended that the United States is a republic, not a democracy, and argued that states' rights should supersede those of the federal government. Welch infused constitutionalist and classical liberal principles, in addition to his conspiracy theories, into the JBS's ideology and rhetoric. In 1983, Congressman Larry McDonald, then the society's newly appointed chairman, characterized the JBS as belonging to the Old Right rather than the New Right. " (from Wikipedia). Cover Photograph; This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is mostly clean and bright, but has a tiny nick / tear to the top spine end. "Thompson remains best known for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1971) , a book first serialized in Rolling Stone in which he grapples with the implications of what he considered the failure of the 1960s counterculture movement. It was adapted for film twice: loosely in Where the Buffalo Roam starring Bill Murray as Thompson in 1980, and explicitly in 1998 by director Terry Gilliam in the eponymous film starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro. Thompson ran unsuccessfully for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado, in 1970 on the Freak Power ticket. His campaign was chronicled in the documentary film Freak Power: The Ballot or the Bomb. He became known for his dislike of Richard Nixon, who he claimed represented "that dark, venal, and incurably violent side of the American character". He covered Nixon's 1972 reelection campaign for Rolling Stone and later collected the stories in book form as Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72. " (from Wikipedia). Putnam Weale" (or sometimes simply "Putnam Weale"). Lenox-Simpson was the son of Clare Lenox-Simpson, who had been in the Chinese Maritime Customs Service since 1861; he had a brother, Evelyn, a mining engineer who worked in China, and a sister, Esme. [1] His education was at Brighton College, after which he too joined the Service. He was in China during the Boxer Rebellion and during the siege of the legations. After this, he became Brigade Interpreter for the British Expeditionary Force (he spoke 5 languages)." "The Imperial Conference of 1921 met in London from 20 June to 5 August 1921. It was chaired by British prime minister David Lloyd George. The Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom and the Dominions met at the 1921 Imperial Conference to determine a unified international policy, particularly the relationship with the United States and Japan. The most urgent issue was that of whether or not to renew the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, which was due to expire on 13 July 1921. On one side were the Prime Minister of Australia, Billy Hughes, and the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Bill Massey, who strongly favoured its renewal. [3] Neither wanted their countries to be caught up in a war between the United States and Japan, and contrasted the generous assistance that Japan rendered during the First World War with the United States' disengagement from international affairs in its aftermath.".
