[MUSIC EPHEMERA], [PALO ALTO, CA ], [PSYCHADELIC MUSIC]
Assu Special Events Presents, Country Joe Mcdonald Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks October 8, 1971 (Memorial Auditorium Stanford University)
Palo Alto, CA: Stanford University, 1971. Handbill. This is a small handbill (approx. 7" x 5 1/2" ). Illustrated on one side. (illustrator unknown). This handbill is in Very Good+ condition. There is a slight paper clip indentation to the front right side. "By 1968, loud rock and roll had become more mainstream, at least in Northern California. Young people up and down the Peninsula wanted to see bands full of long-haired guitarists playing their own music. Palo Alto's downtown, having been gutted by the Stanford Shopping Center in the 1950s, started to add shops selling lava lamps and posters. There weren't any bars in Palo Alto yet--not until 1981--but The Poppycock sold beer, and that was enough. The locus of rock music in town had moved off the Stanford campus and over to the Poppycock." (by ROck Prosopography 101). Very Good+ .

AUDSLEY, GEORGE ASHDOWN, The Art of Organ-Building (Two Volume Set) a Comprehensive Historical, Theoretical, and Practical Treatise on the Tonal Appointment and Mechanical Construction of Concert-Room, Church, and Chamber Organs
AUDSLEY, GEORGE ASHDOWN
The Art of Organ-Building (Two Volume Set) a Comprehensive Historical, Theoretical, and Practical Treatise on the Tonal Appointment and Mechanical Construction of Concert-Room, Church, and Chamber Organs
New York: Dodd, Mead, and Company, 1905. Limited Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. This edition limited to 250 numbered copies signed by the author. This is copy 109. The two volume set is in Near Fine condition and was issued without dust jackets. The volumes are half vellum with green cloth and gilt lettering and decorations to the spines of the books. The text pages are clean and bright. There are previous owner's bookplates on both front pastedown pages. T. E. G. (Top Edge Gilt) Foredges and bottom edges of the text block are untrimmed. The spines of the books have some ground-in dirt. "Audsley's interest in the pipe organ was largely sparked by early experiences hearing W. T. Best at St. George's Hall, Liverpool. Audsley wrote numerous magazine articles on the organ, and as early as the 1880s was envisioning huge instruments with numerous divisions each under separate expression, in imitation of the symphony orchestra. The Los Angeles Art Organ Co. (successors to the Murray M. Harris Organ Company) had Audsley design the world's largest organ they were building for the St. Louis Exposition of 1904, and included him on the paid staff. This instrument was produced just as his book on The Art of Organ-Building was being published This great pipe organ eventually was purchased for the John Wanamaker Store in Philadelphia, PA, where it is today known as the Wanamaker Organ. In 1905, Audsley published the monumental two-volume The Art of Organ Building as an attempt to position himself as the pre-eminent organ designer in the US. The lavish work includes numerous superb drawings done by Audsley and is still consulted today although organ fashions have evolved in many directions in the ever-fluid, passion-driven world of music. He was an early advocate of console standardization and radiating concave pedal keyboards to accommodate the natural movement of human legs. Unfortunately, his plan to develop the profession of "organ architect" as a consultant to work in consultation with major builders in achieving a high-art product was short-lived." (from Wikipedia) Due to the extreme weight of this book, postage will have to be determined at time of ordering. ; Signed by Author. Near Fine .

The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding the group's popularity in the United Kingdom after their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962.". BELLAMY, THOMAS LUDFORD (COMPILED BY), Lyric Poetry of Glees, Madrigals, Catches, Rounds, Canons, and Duets
BELLAMY, THOMAS LUDFORD (COMPILED BY)
Lyric Poetry of Glees, Madrigals, Catches, Rounds, Canons, and Duets
London, England: Richard and John Edward Taylor, 1840. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. This book is in Very Good condition and was likely issued without a dust jacket. The book has it's original ribbed cloth binding. The book covers have some light bumping, rubbing and wear, along with several small to smallish edge tears to the spine ends. The spine of the book has some sunning, and there are several spots of rubbing / discoloration to the front and rear panels. The text pages are mostly clean and bright, though there is some light toning to the page edges. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown page, and a faint previous owner's red penciled name on the front endpaper. "A glee is a type of English part song composed during the Late Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic periods (roughly the Georgian era, taken together). The respectable and artistic character of glees contrasts with the bawdiness of the many catches which continued to be composed and sung well into the early years of the 19th century. The use of the countertenor voice on the upper part(s) in glees composed for men's voices, and on the Alto part(s) in those for mixed voices, is a particular characteristic of the form (the most famous exponent, known for his elegant ornamentation, was William Knyvett) and serves to distinguish glees from other male voice partsongs, which usually lack countrapuntal writing and have the top part taken by a tenor. This gives them a highest note around a major third below that of men's voice glees. Some care is required in interpreting the intended voicing of glees in contemporary editions, due to the gradual replacement, taking place at this time, of the C clef with the treble clef but often without the required octave transposition being specified. "Blesh studied at Dartmouth College and held jobs writing jazz reviews for the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Herald Tribune in the 1940s. He was a prolific promoter of jazz concerts, particularly New Orleans jazz, and hosted a jazz radio program, This Is Jazz, in 1947. (These shows have been reissued by Jazzology Records. ) Blesh in collaboration with Harriet Janis (mother of actor and jazz band leader Conrad Janis) wrote They All Played Ragtime which was published in 1950 by Alfred A Knopf. New York: Alchemical Music Co. / Warner Bros, 1972. Trade Edition. Periodical. Illustrated by Pacific Eye & Ear. B&W Illustrations; This is an oversized paperback book. The book is in Very Good- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book covers have several spots of ground-in dirt. The bottom front spine joint of the book cover has a repaired two inch long tear and there is a small chip to the bottom spine end. The text pages are clean and bright. "The band's first album without Jim Morrison, 1971's Other Voices, had reached No. 31 on the Billboard chart, showing the group could survive Morrison's death. The band – now a trio consisting of keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore – chose to record Other Voices at their rehearsal space known as the Workshop, the same two-story building at 8512 Santa Monica Boulevard they had recorded the successful L. A. Woman, but for Full Circle they opted to move to Hollywood's A&M Studio. While Other Voices was, to a degree, an extension of the L. A. Woman sessions (some of the tracks had been worked up before Morrison had left for Paris) , Full Circle was a standalone work that saw the band delve deeper into jazz and work with some top-shelf session musicians. Bruce Botnick, who had engineered all the Doors albums up to that point and co-produced both L. A. Woman and Other Voices, declined to participate in the sessions. In 2015 he admitted to Uncut's Tom Pinnock that he could not remember whether he was asked to return or not, but maintains he would have turned down the offer, reflecting, "The guys wanted to have a chance to work with some other musicians. As they went into Full Circle they took that extension even further." " (from Wikipedia). Very Good- .
