CALDWELL, TAYLOR
To Look and Pass
New York: Fawcett Gold Medal, 1973. 1st Paperback Edition; 1st Printing. Paperback. Mass Market PB. This is a mass market paperback book and first paperback printing. The book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The spine of the book has some toning / sunning and some light creasing. The text pages are clean and bright. "If Dan Hendricks had been born thirty or so years later, things would not have happened as they did. In a restless and mobile nation he could have escaped from the past, assumed another identity. But in the close-knit community of South Kenton at the turn of the century, he could not escape. — From his earliest years, Dan seemed marked out by fate as one of its victims. In the eyes of the small respectable American town he was an outcast, a social misfit. His mother was dead; his father was only a blacksmith and , what was worse, a drunkard, and the two of them lived in a two-room shack behind the smithy. When Dan fell in love, it was with a woman twenty-two years older than him; when he got married, it was to a woman who hated him and wanted to make him suffer, and who succeeded - even after her death." (from Goodreads). Very Good .

David Kammerer followed Lucien wherever the younger man went—including moves to out-of-state schools. Eventually, the two landed in New York City. Lucien had left University of Chicago after a suicide attempt, which he tried to pass off as a piece of performance art, and enrolled at Columbia University." (from Wikipedia). CHAMBERS, ROBERT W., The Streets of Ascalon Episodes in the Unfinished Career of Richard Quarren, Esq.
CHAMBERS, ROBERT W.
The Streets of Ascalon Episodes in the Unfinished Career of Richard Quarren, Esq.
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1912. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. Illustrated by Charles Dana Gibson. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good+ condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing. There is one spot of discoloration on the rear book cover. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name and address on the front endpaper. "Robert was first educated at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and then entered the Art Students' League at around the age of 20, where the artist Charles Dana Gibson was his fellow student. Chambers studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, and at Académie Julian, in Paris from 1886 to 1893, and his work was displayed at the Salon as early as 1889. On his return to New York, he succeeded in selling his illustrations to Life, Truth, and Vogue magazines. Then, for reasons unclear, he devoted his time to writing, producing his first novel, In the Quarter (written in 1887 in Munich). His most famous, and perhaps most meritorious, effort is The King in Yellow, a collection of Art Nouveau short stories published in 1895. This included several famous weird short stories which are connected by the theme of a fictitious drama of the same title, which drives those who read it insane. E. F. Bleiler described The King in Yellow as one of the most important works of American supernatural fiction. It was also strongly admired by H. P. Lovecraft and his circle. "Chambers returned to the weird genre in his later short story collections The Maker of Moons, The Mystery of Choice and The Tree of Heaven, but none earned him as much success as The King in Yellow. Some of Chambers's work contains elements of science fiction, such as In Search of the Unknown and Police! ! ! , about a zoologist who encounters monsters. " (From Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is crisp and clean. "His main themes include the duality of human nature: sometimes dramatized as the disparity between a character's decorous social persona and inner corruption, and sometimes as a conflict between two characters (often brothers) who embody the salient aspects of both – light and dark, flesh and spirit. Many of his works also express a nostalgia for a vanishing way of life (as evoked by the mythical St. Botolphs in the Wapshot novels) , characterized by abiding cultural traditions and a profound sense of community, as opposed to the alienating nomadism of modern suburbia.
