Los Angeles, CA: Automobile Club of Southern California, 1972. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Maps. This is a 1972 AAA map to the Los Angeles Freeway System. The map is in Very Good+ condition. The map is in mostly clean, bright condition. There are a couple of tiny edge nicks, and one small tear to the map edge, starting at one of the creases. "The Auto Club was an early advocate for the construction of the Ridge Route, the first highway through the Tehachapi Mountains and San Gabriel Mountains, which directly linked Los Angeles to Bakersfield and the Central Valley. The completion of the Ridge Route greatly facilitated automobile travel through this significant mountain barrier. Starting around 1910, the Auto Club sent teams of cartographers to survey the state's roads for the production of maps and to create a uniform signing system. The Auto Club posted thousands of porcelain-on-steel traffic signs throughout the state and continued to do so until the State of California took over the task in the mid-1950s. The signs were produced by a local company that manufactured porcelain-on-steel bathtubs. A few of these signs remain in service today, though they are extremely rare." (from Wikipedia). San Francisco, CA: Clintons of San Francisco, 1940. Maps. B&W Illustrations; This is a small promotional map (13 1/2" x 10 1/2") of downtown San Francisco. The map is in Very Good condition. The outer side of the map has some ground-in dirt and finger spots, along with a couple of creases. There are a couple of small tears to the edge creases of the map. "Clinton Cafeterias operated in Los Angeles, CA, and San Francisco, CA, during the mid-20th century, when cafeteria-style dining was most popular. This location--distinguished by its Deco-ish neon sign--was in operation c. 1950." (from PCAD). Very Good .

Color Illustrations; This is a slightly larger than trade sized map folded like a booklet that has a poster of Montana on the opposite side. The map is in Very Good condition, but has a couple of small edge nicks and some light wear to the creases. There is one one inch tear to one of the creases. The front and rear panels have some fading and rubbing. Included is an introduction to Montana from the Governor (Tim Babcock) at the time.. Very Good .

"JOHNSTON, ALEXANDER KEITH, the elder (1804–1871) , geographer, fourth son of Andrew Johnston, by Isabel, daughter of Archibald Keith of Newbattle, was born at Kirkhill, near Penicuik, Midlothian, on 28 Dec. 1804. He was educated at the high school and university of Edinburgh, was apprenticed in 1820 to the Edinburgh engraving firm of James Kirkwood & Sons, and in 1826 went into partnership as an engraver with his brother William His first maps appeared in ‘A Traveller's Guide Book, ’ 1830.
