"Bryher (2 September 1894 – 28 January 1983) was the pen name of the English novelist, poet, memoirist, and magazine editor Annie Winifred Ellerman, of the Ellerman ship-owning family. She was a major figure of the international set in Paris in the 1920s, using her fortune to help many struggling writers. With her lesbian lover Hilda Doolittle (H. D. ) and Scottish writer Kenneth Macpherson, she launched the film magazine Close Up, which introduced Sergei Eisenstein’s work to British viewers. From her home in Switzerland, she helped to evacuate Jews from Hitler’s Germany, and then became a popular historical novelist." (from Wikipedia). Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket .

FORD, PAUL LEICESTER, Janice Meredith a Story of the American Revolution
FORD, PAUL LEICESTER
Janice Meredith a Story of the American Revolution
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1899. Limited Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. Illustrated by Howard Pyle & students. B&W Illustrations; Two Volume Set. Limited Edition. Both volumes are in Very Good condition and possibly issued without dust jackets. Volume two is in slightly better condition. Together, The books and their contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine of both volumes have some sunning / fading, while volume one has several small edge tears to the top spine end. The text pages are clean and bright. The text is uncut and untrimmed. There is an inked former owner's name and date (1899) on the front endpaper of volume one and again on the half title page of volume two. Volume one includes a Miniature of Janice Meredith by Lillie V. O'Ryan while volume two includes a miniature of George Washington by Sharpless. The text of both volumes is illustrated with 172 plates - most of which are by the students of Howard Pyle. This copy is missing three plates (pgs 186, 188 & 192 - however they do not appear to have been excised, but conversely, left out during the binding process). The majority of the plates appear to be by his students, especially some of his more favored female artists, including Ellen Bernard Thompson and Anna Whelan Betts. It is possible that Howard Pyle is responsible for up to 58 of the illustrations (according to Howard Pyle: Imagining An American School of Art by Jill May, etc. ). This volume sold very well as an illustrated holiday edition, in fact it was listed as the best selling book in February 1900. "Ford was the great-grandson of Noah Webster and the brother of historian Worthington C. Ford. He wrote of the lives of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and others, edited the works of Thomas Jefferson, and wrote a number of novels which had considerable success, including The Honorable Peter Stirling, Story of an Untold Love, Janice Meredith, Wanted a Matchmaker, and Wanted a Chaperon. Ford's edition of The Writings of Thomas Jefferson is still regarded as one of the monuments of American historical scholarship, setting the standard for documentary editing for half a century until the appearance of the first volume of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, edited by Julian P. Boyd. Ford's edition remains valuable for its accuracy of transcription from original manuscripts and its careful annotation of the documents chosen for publication. The Ford edition appeared in two versions, a 10 volume edition published between 1892 and 1896 and a 14 volume limited numbered edition issued in 1904, known as the "Federal" edition. East Hampton, MA: Small Beer Press, 2010. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 1931520704. This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Near Fine dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is some very light bumping to the spine ends of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. She was initially known for her intense speculative fiction for adults, but has written young adult novels, the historical fiction Under the Poppy trilogy, and a fictional biography of Christopher Marlowe. Koja is also a prolific author of short stories, including many in collaboration with Barry N. Malzberg. Koja has also collaborated with Carter Scholz. Most of her short fiction remains uncollected. Koja's novels and short stories frequently concern characters who have been in some way marginalized by society, often focusing on the transcendence and/or disintegration which proceeds from this social isolation (as in The Cipher, Bad Brains, "Teratisms," The Blue Mirror, etc. ). Koja won the Bram Stoker Award and the Locus Award for her first novel The Cipher, and a Deathrealm Award for Strange Angels. Her prose has been described as "stunning". " (from Wikipedia). LAMB, HAROLD
The Three Palladins
West Kingston, RI: Donald M. Grant, Publisher, Inc, 1977. 1st Edition Thus; 1st Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0686279018. Illustrated by Cathy Hill. B&W and Color Illustrations; This copy has been signed by the Illustrator Cathy Hill on the title page. This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Near Fine dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is crisp and clean. "In a Lamb story, honor and loyalty to one's comrades-in-arms were more important than cultural identity, although often his protagonists ended up risking their lives to protect the cultures that had spurned them. Those holding positions of authority are almost universally depicted as being corrupted by their own power or consumed with greed, be they Russian boyars or Buddhist priests, and merchants are almost always shown as placing their own desire for coin above the well-being of their fellow men. Loyalty, wisdom, and religious piety is shown again and again in these stories to lie more securely in the hands of Lamb's common folk. While female characters occasionally played the familiar role of damsel in distress in these stories, Lamb more typically depicted his women as courageous, independent, and more shrewd than their male counterparts. Their motives and true loyalties, though, remained mysterious to Lamb's male characters, and their unknowable nature is frequently the source of plot tension. WALLACE, LEW, Ben Hur
WALLACE, LEW
Ben Hur
Germany: Ensslin & Laiblins, 1915. Early printing. Hardcover. This book is in Very Good+ condition. This is an early German printing (circa 1915). There is full size pictorial pastedown illustration on the front cover with silver and gilt decorations. The covers have some beginning bumping and fraying to the spine ends and corners. There is a tiny slit to the rear spine joint. The text pages are clean and bright, but do have some toning due to the acid content of the paper. "In 1843, Wallace began writing his first novel, The Fair God, but it was not published until 1873. The popular historical novel, with Cortez's conquest of Mexico as its central theme, was based on William H. Prescott's History of the Conquest of Mexico. Wallace's book sold seven thousand copies in its first year. Its sales continued to rise after Wallace's reputation as an author was established with the publication of subsequent novels. Wallace wrote the manuscript for Ben-Hur, his second and best-known novel, during his spare time at Crawfordsville, and completed it in Santa Fe, while serving as the territorial governor of New Mexico. Ben-Hur, an adventure story of revenge and redemption, is told from the perspective of a Jewish nobleman named Judah Ben-Hur. Because Wallace had not been to the Holy Land before writing the book, he began research to familiarize himself with the area's geography and its history at the Library of Congress in Washington, D. C, in 1873. Harper and Brothers published the book on November 12, 1880." (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .
