EPHEMERA, Group of Papers Relating to the Osborne Publications Book About Bobbi Trout, Aviatrix, and Other Early Bird Aviators
EPHEMERA
Group of Papers Relating to the Osborne Publications Book About Bobbi Trout, Aviatrix, and Other Early Bird Aviators
Santa Clara, CA: Osborne Productions, 1985. Other. Twenty-Eight pages, including a page of Early Birds letterhead, a typed chapter of Amelia, My Sister, a pre-publication advertisement prospectus (with For the Signature of... At the top) , several pages of copier prints of handwritten letters with printer notations about where and how to add to a book, a small photograph with printer tags, and more, all held in a manila envelope. "The Early Birds of Aviation is an organization devoted to the history of early pilots. The organization was started in 1928 and accepted a membership of 598 pioneering aviators. Membership was limited to those who piloted a glider, gas balloon, or airplane, prior to December 17, 1916, covering the entirety of the pioneer era of aviation, and just over two years into World War I. The cutoff date was set at December 17 to correspond to the first flights of Wilbur and Orville Wright. 1916 was chosen as a cutoff because a large number of people were trained in 1917 as pilots for World War I. Twelve of the aviators were women. The original organization dissolved once the last living member had died. This occurred with the death of 99-year-old George D. Grundy Jr. On May 19, 1998." (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

UNITED STATES NAVAL TRAINING SCHOOL, Graduation Booklet from the United States Naval Training School for the First Class of the Women's Reserve of the Navy (and Coast Guard) (Waves)
UNITED STATES NAVAL TRAINING SCHOOL
Graduation Booklet from the United States Naval Training School for the First Class of the Women's Reserve of the Navy (and Coast Guard) (Waves)
Oxford, OH: United States Navy / Miami University, 1943. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; Oblong booklet with cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The text pages are generally clean and bright. (there are a couple of spots on the first several pages) Laid-in are the graduation program (one page, folded one) and a course completion award for Naval Training School (Radio) for Ruth Eileen Ewl. The course took place at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, at the same time as the Eleventh Graduating class (radio) of Navy cadets. "To be eligible for officer candidate school, women had to be aged 20 to 49 and possess a college degree or have two years of college and two years of equivalent professional or business experience. Volunteers at the enlisted level had to be aged 20 to 35 and possess a high school or a business diploma, or have equivalent experience. The WAVES were primarily white, but 72 African-American women eventually served. The Navy's training of most WAVE officer candidates took place at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts. Specialized training for officers was conducted on several college campuses and naval facilities. Most enlisted members received recruit training at Hunter College, in the Bronx, New York City. After recruit training, some women attended specialized training courses on college campuses and at naval facilities. The WAVES served at 900 stations in the United States. The territory of Hawaii was the only overseas station where their staff was assigned. Many female officers entered fields previously held by men, such as medicine and engineering. Enlisted women served in jobs from clerical to parachute riggers. Many women experienced workplace hostility from their male counterparts. The Navy's lack of clear-cut policies, early on, was the source of many of the difficulties. The WAVES' peak strength was 86,291 members. Upon demobilization of the officer and enlisted members, Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, Fleet Admiral Ernest King, and Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz all commended the WAVES for their contributions to the war effort. SHELTON, GILBERT, ALLEN GINSBERG, MICHAEL MCCLURE, LENORE KANDEL, DIANE DI PRIMA, RICHIE ROLLINS, WAVY GRAVY, FAMILY DOG ET AL
Family Dog Presents Tribal Stomp (Illustrated Program) (Tenth Annual Stomp)
San Francisco, CA: Family Dog, 1978. Other. Illustrated by Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Color Illustrations; This is a single piece of paper (17" x 11 1/2" ) folded once vertically, making four pages. The program is in Very Good+ condition. There is one very light wrinkle to the paper (looks like it was formed during the makeup of the paper). There is some slight toning to the edges of the white outer pages. There is one tiny crease / tear to the spine of the program towards the bottom edge. The color illustrations are very bright and vivid. "To promote their concerts in both San Francisco and Denver, Family Dog published a series of innovative psychedelic posters, handbills and other ephemera, created by a group of prominent young San Francisco artists including Wes Wilson, Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse (Mouse Studios) , Rick Griffin, Steve Renick and Victor Moscoso. Often printed using intensely colored fluorescent inks, they typically featured a mixture of found images and specially drawn artwork. The posters of Griffin, Mouse and Kelly, in particular, were known for the intricate and highly stylized hand-lettering in which the concert details were written out, which sometimes took considerable time and effort to decipher. Original Avalon posters are now collector's items. In a slide show published with the obituary at the time of Wilson's death in 2020, The New York Times included an apparent portrait watercolor of Helms—a book in the foreground has Helms' full name on it. This is an informational booklet (oversized) for one of the tours in the 1970's for Fred Waring and the Young (New Young) Pennsylvanians.
