ADAK, ALASKA (U. S. NAVY) (EPHEMERA), Hammerhead Lodge Menu
ADAK, ALASKA (U. S. NAVY) (EPHEMERA)
Hammerhead Lodge Menu
Adak, AK: Hammer Head Lodge, 0. Hardcover. This is a cardcover folder / menu with a decorated and stamped front cover. The interior contains two typed pages of menu items with prices under plastic holders. This menu is from circa 1955 at the Hammerhead Lodge which was the Naval Officer's mess on Adak Island, Alaska. "On 1 July 1950, the Air Force transferred Davis AFB to the United States Navy who established an anti-submarine warfare base there. Adak was most recently run by the U. S. Navy as a deployment base for P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft, primarily to conduct antisubmarine warfare operations against submarines and surveillance of naval surface vessels of the former Soviet Union. The Naval Air Facility was also reported to be used as a refueling stop for U-2, Dragon Lady, ultra-high altitude reconnaissance aircraft. By the 1980s there were over 6,000 Navy personnel on the islands. With the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, NAS Adak's operational viability as a front-line military installation began to wane, and in the mid-1990s a decision was made by the federal government to cease military flight operations there under the military's Base Realignment and Closure Program (BRAC). On 31 March 1997, the Navy closed Adak Naval Air Facility. The lowering of the flag for the last time ended an era that began of 31 August 1942, when U. S. Forces landed on the Aleutian Island and established an advance base there for operations against the Japanese on Kiska and Attu Islands. The Navy left behind a contingent of 30 Navy personnel and 200 civilian contractors to maintain facilities, keep the runway open and begin an environmental cleanup.". Very Good+ .

WORLD AIRWAYS, Group of Five Promotional Photos from World Airways from the Early 1970's
WORLD AIRWAYS
Group of Five Promotional Photos from World Airways from the Early 1970's
Peachtree City, GA: World Airways, 1973. Other. B&W Illustrations; This group of five promotional 8" x 10" photographs are in Near Fine condition and have typed promotional notes attached. Two of the photos show stewardesses, the other three ground the cockpit crew, a technician, and a supply room. While the descriptions have some basic details (including information on the 747C) there is no citation from the company on any of the photos. World Airlines started using 747's in the early 1970's for their commercial flights." Also, in the early 1970s, World operated three Boeing 747 aircraft and was the launch customer for the "flip nose" front-loading variant of the 747. Later, World acquired DC-10s that were retired in 2010. World experienced heavy losses in the 1980s as a result of operating scheduled passenger services. In the late 1980s, the company moved its headquarters from Oakland to Washington Dulles International Airport, acquired Key Airlines from Bain Capitals' Presidential Airways, and established ties to Malaysia Airlines. World was burdened financially as its cash was siphoned off by parent WorldCorp to support a telecommunications venture in which the parent had invested. During the first Persian Gulf War, World did a substantial amount of profitable business for the military, enabling the addition of the MD-11 to the fleet. During the mid-1990s, World operated the military passenger trunk route from Osan Air Base, Korea and Kadena Air Base, Okinawa to Los Angeles, using MD-11 aircraft. World has been headquartered near Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport. " (from Wikipedia). Near Fine .

GOLDEN GATE INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY, 1939 World's Fair Facts
GOLDEN GATE INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY
1939 World's Fair Facts
San Francisco, CA: Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939. Brochure. B&W Illustrations; This is a promotional brochure put together by the Golden Gate International Exposition to advertise the Expo. It comes with one half of the rear panel blank to be used to mail the brochure to friends, relatives and colleagues. The brochure consists of one page folded four times, with text and photos on both recto and verso with basic information about the fair - dates, map, plan of events and more. The brochure is in Very Good+ condition with just some light rubbing to the outer covers. "The idea to hold a World's Fair to commemorate the completion of the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge started from a letter to The San Francisco News in February 1933. Architects W. P. Day and George Kelham were assigned to consider the merits of potential sites around the city, including Golden Gate Park, China Basin, Candle Stick Point, and Lake Merced. By 1934, the choice of sites had been narrowed to the areas adjoining the two bridges: either "an island built up from shallow water" north of Yerba Buena Island which would go on to be named Treasure Island, or the Presidio, which had previously been used in 1915 for the Panama–Pacific International Exposition. Yerba Buena Shoals was chosen as the site in February 1935. In August 1935, a $10 million proposal using federal WPA funds for construction work was advanced, and in October of that year, Leland W. Culter, president of San Francisco Bay Exposition, Inc, announced that President Roosevelt had approved US$3,000,000 (equivalent to $55,940,000 in 2019) to help fund the cost of reclaiming land at Yerba Buena Shoals. FIRST METHODIST CHURCH (PALO ALTO, CA), The Methodist Bulletin November 20, 1949 (Hamilton Avenue at Webster Street)
FIRST METHODIST CHURCH (PALO ALTO, CA)
The Methodist Bulletin November 20, 1949 (Hamilton Avenue at Webster Street)
Palo Alto, CA: First Methodist Church, 1949. Pamphlet. B&W Illustrations; This is a tall, three-fold pamphlet from the First Methodist Church of Palo Alto. The pamphlet is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The pamphlet has been folded in half horizontally. Included is the worship service information (hymns, readings, etc. ) along with notes on various other upcoming events and upcoming classes, groups, etc. Including a long paragraph about "How one Family Met Invading Russians", with a true account by Muriel Lester. "First Methodist Church was established in Palo Alto in 1894, the year the city was incorporated. Land, encompassing most of the current site at Hamilton Avenue and Webster Street, had been donated and money and been pledged for construction of a church building. During the planning and construction period, the 24 charter members of the church met for Sunday services in Nortree Hall, a meeting room over a store on University Avenue. By the time the picturesque redwood church was completed two years later, the membership had grown to 58. Within the next 15 years, the membership flourished and outgrew the original redwood church. The congregation built an esthetically pleasing traditional style white stucco house of worship, dedicated in 1914, on the site of the redwood church, which had been moved to the other side of Webster for use as at a temporary meeting house during the construction. The stucco church building was enlarged and remodeled with a new parsonage in 1948, major remodeling in 1949, and a new education building and fellowship hall in 1952 (designed by Carlton Arthur Steiner, architect of the present church building, remodeled in 2000). " (from the church's website). Very Good .

DODGE DIVISION - CHRYSLER CORPORATION, Ephemera - Dodge Matador * Polara Promotional Booklet (1960)
DODGE DIVISION - CHRYSLER CORPORATION
Ephemera - Dodge Matador * Polara Promotional Booklet (1960)
Detroit, MI: Chrysler Corporation, 1960. Booklet. Color Illustrations; This is an oblong promotional booklet for the Dodge Division of the Chrysler Corporation for 1960 featuring the Dodge Matador and Dodge Polar cars. The booklet is in Very Good- condition with illustrated covers and a stapled spine. The booklet covers have ground-in dirt, spots of rubbing, creasing to the corners and several patches of toning / discoloration, especially to the rear cover. The text pages are mostly clean and bright, with some occasional spots of foxing. "The Dodge Polara was an automobile introduced in the United States for the 1960 model year as Dodge's top-of-the-line full-size car; after the introduction of the Dodge Custom 880 in 1962, the Polara nameplate designated a step below the full sized best trimmed Dodge model; the Polara that year had been downsized to what was in effect intermediate, or mid-size status." "The Matador (and the similar, better-trimmed Polara) featured styling cues that were carried over from 1959 models, themselves an evolution of Virgil Exner's "Forward Look" cars introduced in 1957. Now built on a new unibody chassis, the 1960 Matador continued the Dodge styling hallmarks of stacked "jet pod" taillights, however, the size of the lights was greatly exaggerated, with the lower light set into the rear bumper. The design also incorporated Dodge’s trademark (shortened) tailfins, which included small vertical taillight lenses placed on the vertical surface at the back of the fin; again. The purpose of the shortened fin was meant to exaggerate the length of the “jet pods” holding the taillights. The front end featured a small grille comprising six stacks of aluminum rectangles nested in a massive (and complex) front bumper assembly.". Very Good- .

HILLER AIRCRAFT CORPORATION
Group of Ephemera on the X-18 "Propelloplane"
Palo Alto, CA: Hiller Aircraft Corporation, 1958. Photograph. Ex-Library. B&W Illustrations; This is a group of ephemera relating to the release and promotion of the X-18 "Propelloplane". The group includes two typed immediate realease sheets, four 8" x 10" black and white photographs of the X-18, and a press reference manual, all in Very Good+ or better condition. "Stanley Hiller, then seventeen, established the first helicopter factory on the West Coast of the United States, located in Berkeley, California, in 1942, under the name "Hiller Industries," to develop his design for the coaxial-rotor XH-44 "Hiller-Copter" for the U. S. Army. The XH-44 became operational in 1944. In collaboration with Henry J. Kaiser, it became United Helicopters in 1945. In the postwar years, United Helicopter produced a number of innovative helicopter designs for military and civilian purposes, including coaxial-rotor and tailless designs, as well as more conventional models. In January, 1949, a Hiller 360 became the first civilian helicopter to cross the United States. Besides helicopters, in the year after World War II, Stanley Hiller researched a two-man rocket-jet aircraft design that took off and landed vertically, called the VJ-100, in which he tried unsuccessfully to interest the U. S. Military." (from Wikipedia) "The Hiller X-18 was an experimental cargo transport aircraft designed to be the first testbed for tiltwing and V/STOL (vertical/short takeoff and landing) technology. Design work started in 1955 by Stanley Hiller Jr and Hiller Aircraft Corporation received a manufacturing contract and funding from the U. S. Air Force to build the only X-18 ever produced, serialled 57-3078. To speed up construction and conserve money, the plane was constructed from scavenged parts including a Chase YC-122C Avitruc fuselage, 49-2883, and turboprops from the Lockheed XFV-1 and Convair XFY-1 Pogo experimental fighter programs. The tri-bladed contra-rotating propellers were a giant 16 ft (4.8 m) across. The Westinghouse turbojet engine had its exhaust diverted upwards and downwards at the tail to give the plane pitch control at low speeds. Hiller nicknamed their X-18 the Propelloplane for public relations purposes." (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

FRAMED EPHEMERA FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO FIRE DEPARTMENT, Ephemera from the San Francisco Fire Department
FRAMED EPHEMERA FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO FIRE DEPARTMENT
Ephemera from the San Francisco Fire Department
San Francisco, CA: San Francisco Fire Department, 1914. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This is a large framed group of ephemera - with information to be used by firemen in the course of their duties. The latest date on this material is July 1914. The frame is in very nice clean, condition and is somewhat unusual in it's makeup - with screws and slats on the rear so it can be opened (basically, this frame is in the manor of a bulletin board which can be updated without too much difficulty) . Inside the frame are five sheets of paper which have been notated with different tables, including: SFFD Preliminary Comp. Calls & S. G. Signals, Tapping & Clearance Drills for Various Taps, Diameters of Drills, Powers & Roots of Numbers, SFFD Names and Locations of Apparatuses, Standard Telegraph Code information and two sheets underneath which aren't really visible. "On July 11, 1912, a unique contest was conducted in the presence of Chief Murphy, the Fire Commissioners, the Fire Committee of the Board of Supervisors, and a large attending crowd. A newly designed motor drawn apparatus, the Nott Motor Engine, was to be pitted against the finest horse drawn rig in the Department. The object of the contest was to determine the swiftest and most efficient of the two. The start of the race was from Second Avenue & Clement Street, the old house of Twenty-six Engine. At the sound of the gong the horses leaped into their collars and charged out the door, smoke already belching from the steamer. The driver of the Nott Motor Engine cranked his machine and was quickly in pursuit. His objective was the hydrant at Thirteenth and Lake Streets. He made it in 2 minutes and 20 seconds and the crew had water out the nozzle in a total elapsed time of 3 minutes and 40 seconds. The foam flecked horses drew up to their hydrant at Eleventh and Lake in 3 minutes and 55 seconds, with water flowing in 5 minutes and 6 seconds. Everyone knew what the results meant. The days of the horses had passed, and after this time none were purchased for Fire Department use. In 1903, the first electric auto had been purchased for the Chief and three more were bought in 1905, but they proved unreliable and none were in service at the time of the Fire. The first motor driven apparatus was installed in Chemical Company No. 3 on Bush Street in 1912. In March of the next year the first auto-driven steam engine was installed at Engine Company Twenty-eight, Stockton and Greenwich Streets." (from the SFFD historical page). Very Good+ .

Fantasia (Souvenir Program Book)
New York, NY: Walt Disney Productions, 1940. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Stapled wraps. B&W and Color Photographs & Illustrations; Uncommon Oversized Souvenir Program for the Disney Film: Fantasia. This program book is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. This copy has some light toning to the edges of the front book cover. There is one tiny nick to the bottom front cover. The text pages are clean and bright. "Disney settled on the film's concept in 1938 as work neared completion on The Sorcerer's Apprentice, originally an elaborate Silly Symphony cartoon designed as a comeback role for Mickey Mouse, who had declined in popularity. As production costs surpassed what the short could earn, Disney decided to include it in a feature-length film of multiple segments set to classical pieces with Stokowski and Taylor as collaborators. The soundtrack was recorded using multiple audio channels and reproduced with Fantasound, a pioneering sound system developed by Disney and RCA that made Fantasia the first commercial film shown in stereo and a precursor to surround sound. Fantasia was first released as a theatrical roadshow that was held in 13 cities across the U. S. Between 1940 and 1941; the first began at the Broadway Theatre in New York City on November 13, 1940. While acclaimed by critics, it failed to make a profit owing to World War II's cutting off distribution to the European market, the film's high production costs, and the expense of building Fantasound equipment and leasing theatres for the roadshow presentations."
