As this poster was designed for 'wild' pasting, only unused posters could have survived. On top of this, fewer were printed as they were only used in New York City and other metropolitan areas." (from Sothebys) "2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, and was inspired by Clarke's 1951 short story "The Sentinel" and other short stories by Clarke. Clarke also developed a novelisation of the film, which was released after the film's release, and in part written concurrently with the screenplay. The film stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester and Douglas Rain, and follows a voyage to Jupiter with the sentient supercomputer HAL after the discovery of an alien monolith. Assu Special Events Presents, Country Joe Mcdonald Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks October 8, 1971 (Memorial Auditorium Stanford University)
Palo Alto, CA: Stanford University, 1971. Handbill. This is a small handbill (approx. 7" x 5 1/2" ). Illustrated on one side. (illustrator unknown). This handbill is in Very Good+ condition. There is a slight paper clip indentation to the front right side. "By 1968, loud rock and roll had become more mainstream, at least in Northern California. Young people up and down the Peninsula wanted to see bands full of long-haired guitarists playing their own music. Palo Alto's downtown, having been gutted by the Stanford Shopping Center in the 1950s, started to add shops selling lava lamps and posters. There weren't any bars in Palo Alto yet--not until 1981--but The Poppycock sold beer, and that was enough. The locus of rock music in town had moved off the Stanford campus and over to the Poppycock." (by ROck Prosopography 101). Very Good+ .

Tempe, AZ: NA, 2005. Ephemera. Color Illustrations; Ephemera: This is a small Banner / concert poster for the Indie Rock / Punk Rock Group The Format. This item is in Near Fine condition. This is a concert banner (17" x 11.5") consisting of paint on canvas -- likely silk screened -- for two 2005 dates (May 8 & 9) in Tempe, AZ. The Format appears to be the headline group, but also includes the groups Steel, Train, Tickertape Parade, Limbeck, and, Let Go. This rather unique item is not signed by an artist and could possibly be the work of an aspiring college student. The banner is clean and fresh, with no dirt or finger marks (in fact, it looks and feels as if it had never been used). The only fault is that the unsewn edges have started to ravel a bit at the very edges.. Fine .

[EPHEMERA] [SAN FRANCISCO] [FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT] [STAMP]
In Tribute to the Memory of Our Late President Franklin Delano Roosevelt 1882-1945 Issued During the United Nations Conference, San Francisco 1945
San Francisco, CA: Literary Anniversary Club, 1945. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Other. This is one sheet, folded once, with text on three pages. The front cover includes a tipped on US Postage Stamp Commemorating the beginning of the United Nations. The center text page is a tribute to Franklin D. Roosevelt by Flodden W. Heron entitled Franklin D. Roosevelt the Crusader. The item is in Very Good condition, with some light wrinkling to the spine and a couple of light creases to the corners. "By 1945 it became clear that the Allies were winning the war, so President Roosevelt and other Allied world leaders continued their preparations for lasting peace between nations. U. S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt first coined the name “United Nations” in 1942 when representatives of 26 nations pledged their governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers. The next significant step towards creating this international body was a conference of delegates, to be held in San Francisco, called the United Nations Conference on International Organization (UNCIO). Unfortunately, President Roosevelt would not live to see his inspirational plans for peace come to fruition. Less than two weeks before he planned to open the United Nations Conference on International Organization, President Franklin D. Roosevelt suffered a massive stroke and died on April 12th, 1945. The nation immediately went into mourning. Just hours after FDR’s death, Vice President Harry S. Truman was sworn in as the president of the United States. As his very first act as president, Truman decided to proceed with the upcoming San Francisco conference as scheduled." (from Wikipedia). Very Good .

[NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR WOMEN] [EPHEMERA], Letter of Congratulations, and Support for the Nomination of Geraldine Ferraro for Vice-President of the United States

Letter of Congratulations, and Support for the Nomination of Geraldine Ferraro for Vice-President of the United States
Washington D. C.: National Organization for Women, 1984. Ephemera. This is a typed form letter to members of the National Organization for Women to congratulate Geraldine Ferraro as the Vice Presidential candidate of the Democratic party for 1984. The letter is in Very Good condition and is lacking an envelope. There is some wrinkling and nicking to the edges of the page, along with some beginning toning. The letter goes on to discuss a need for progress on the constitutional amendement for ERA (Equal Rights Amendment). Overall, the letter is in clean bright condition. "The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal rights for all citizens regardless of sex; it seeks to end the legal distinctions between men and women in terms of divorce, property, employment, and other matters. The ERA was originally written by Alice Paul and Crystal Eastman. The amendment was introduced in Congress for the first time in 1921 and has prompted conversations about the meaning of equality for women and men. In its early history, middle-class women were largely supportive, while those speaking for the working class were often opposed, arguing that employed women needed special protections regarding working conditions and employment hours. With the rise of the women's movement in the United States in the 1960s, the ERA garnered increasing support, and, after being reintroduced by Representative Martha Griffiths (D-MI) , in 1971, it passed both houses of Congress in 1972 and was submitted to the state legislatures for ratification.". Coins of interest to collectors often include those that circulated for only a brief time, coins with mint errors and especially beautiful or historically significant pieces. Coin collecting can be differentiated from numismatics, in that the latter is the systematic study of currency. Though closely related, the two disciplines are not necessarily the same. A numismatist may or may not be a coin collector, and vice versa." (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

[EPHEMERA], [PHOTOGRAPHS] [ATOMIC BOMB] [HIROSHIMA]
Two Photographs of Atomic Bomb Damage in Hiroshima, Japan
Hiroshima, Japan: USGS, 1945. Photograph. Hiroshima: United States Strategic Bomb Survey (circa 1945). 2 black and white gelatin silver print photographs, measuring approx. 4" x 5". There are typed captions on the reverse of each print. One print includes a large ink stamped image of the Hiroshima- Matsuyama Ferry Line. These two photographs are official United States Strategic Bomb Survey damage prints of Hiroshima (USSBS) , captured on November 28, 1945. One print shows the exterior view of the Chugoka Coal Distribution Control Company (building #12 in the survey) , the other photograph has a caption of "Building 300 ft. NWW from GZ, no Structural Damage. Both photographs include latitude and longitude coordinates. "Verbal and written accounts of the destruction of Hiroshima by atomic bomb on August 6, 1945 are well known, but photographic images of it have always been relatively rare. While the U. S. Government attempted to control the circulation of any such images following the end of World War II, the irony is that it was also the source of the largest body of photographs of the aftermath of the event. That work, made in 1945 for the United States Strategic Bombing Survey — initially classified and subsequently lost for more than 40 years...Photographers in the Physical Damage Division of the Survey were tasked with documenting the broad extent and mundane detail of atomic destruction for later analysis by architects and civil engineers. The images they made helped form the basis for civil defense architecture in the U. S, especially in the early part of the Cold War, from the design of bomb and fallout shelters to suburbanization.". Two Carte de Visites from Nagasaki, Japan C1880's-1890's View of the "Temple of the Devils" and the "Bund of Ohuda"
Nagasaki, Japan: No Publisher Listed, 1880. Other. B&W Illustrations; Two Carte de Visites from Nagasaki, Japan c1880-1890's. The first view is of the Bund of Oura - the waterfront where westerners were allowed, with Sampans in the water. The Second view is "Oni no Jere" The Temple of Devils on a hillside. Both cards are in Very Good+ condition, with some beginning tidemarking / foxing to the edges. "A series of encounters between the West and Japan in the 1850s ended Japan's isolationist trade policies. In particular, the treaty with Russia, signed on February 7, 1855 established Nagasaki as an open port and, further, granted extraterritoriality privileges to foreigners living in Japan. These encounters finally culminated in 1859 when the Ansei Treaties, and in particular the Harris Treaty with the United States, took effect. These treaties demanded immediate opening of ports, and also established generally unequal trade relationships between the Western powers and Japan. In 1860 development of the area around Oura Creek began; by August 15, 1862, Japanese officials ordered foreign residents of Nagasaki into this new settlement area.". Very Good+ .

(EPHEMERA) [WORLD WAR I] [WORLD WAR I BALLOONS] [BALLOON PATROLS][BALLONHALLE VON INNEN]
Two Original Postcards from World War I Germany Featuring Balloons
Germany: No Publisher Listed, 0. Other. B&W Illustrations; Two World War I postcards (5.5" x 3.5") in Very Good- condition. Both postcards are not filled in (with the exception of four words inked on one of the postcards). The cards are labeled: Fesselballon vor dem Aufstieg, and, Ballonhalle von Innen. One postcard has a one and a half cent stamp. "World War I was the high point for the military use of observation balloons, which were extensively deployed by both sides. The British, despite their experience in late 1800s Africa, were behind developments and were still using spherical balloons. These were quickly replaced by versions, commonly referred to as kite balloons, which were flyable and could operate in more extreme weather conditions; at first the German Parseval-Siegsfeld type balloon, and then French Caquot type dirigible. By World War I, artillery had developed to the point where it was capable of engaging targets beyond the visual range of a ground-based observer. Positioning artillery observers on balloons, generally a few miles behind the front lines and at altitude, allowed them to see targets at greater range than they could on the ground. This allowed the artillery to take advantage of its increased range." (from Wikipedia). Very Good- .
