B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good to Near Very Good+ condition and was likely issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The covers of the book have some light rubbing and wear, especially the spine joints. The endpapers are illustrated with a picture of a championship winner Great Dane drawn by the author, Albert B. Gardner. Inner front hinges have started to split at both top and bottom edges of book. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's name inked neatly on the front pastedown. The book includes cartoon drawings by Walter Lantz (name misspelled on title page) the creator of Woody Woodpecker. There are cartoons and drawings by the author throughout the text, along with numerous black and white photographs of championship Great Danes. The book includes sections on: Background, Breeding principles, Brood matron and Puppies, Diet, Standards for the breed, Dane Sense and senses, Schooling and training, keeping a Great Dane, Difficulties with the breed, diseases, housing problems, pictures, dog shows, working groups, long shadow and a breeder's directory. Albert B. Gardner appears to have been a semi-well-known architect in the southern California area in the 1930's (possibly the same Albert B. Gardner who created the Buck Jones house in Sherman Oaks, which was subsequently turned into a dormitory / apartment building for the Mar- Ken school (a school for the children of prominent movie stars). The illustrator, Walter Lantz (the name is curiously misspelled on the title page) is the creator of Woody Woodpecker and other famous cartoons. Overall, this item is a treasure-trove of Southern Californiana while also being a very detailed look at a specific breed of dogs.. Very Good .

The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some beginning bumping. The text pages are clean and bright. There are two previous bookstore stickers on the front pastedown page. The price clipped dust jacket has some light generalized toning and a couple of smallish marks. The spine has some light rubbing as well. " When her schoolmaster father died in 1919, her mother moved the family to Headington in Oxford, Woodhouse attended Headington School there. She was later the only female student at the Harper Adams Agricultural College in Shropshire. After returning to Oxford to start Headington Riding school and Boarding Kennels, she married her first husband Allan George Hill in August 1934 and then moved with him to spend more than three years in Argentina training horses. The marriage ended in divorce and she returned to Headington. In the 1930s, Barbara became a dog breeder and ran kennels until about 1960. She first appeared on TV as a contestant on What's My Line where the panelists failed to identify her occupation. She also appeared on CBS 60 Minutes.". Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket .
