0684127520 SANDER, ELLEN (FOREWORD BY TERRY SOUTHERN), Trips Rock Life in the Sixties
SANDER, ELLEN (FOREWORD BY TERRY SOUTHERN)
Trips Rock Life in the Sixties
New York, NY: Scribner, 1973. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0684127520. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good condition and has a Good dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a long previous owner's inked notation on the reverse of the front endpaper. The price clipped dust jacket has several edge tears, nicks and chips missing. "Sander’s gritty pieces on Sixties subcultures soon caught the attention of national editors, and she began to get commissions from national publications. For her first assignment for Life Magazine, Sander agreed to go on the road with a rock band and report on the grueling demands and tawdry hijinks of the concert tour, including the coterie of girls and young women who pursued band members. According to Mick Wall in When Giants Walked the Earth, Sander had hoped to cover The Who, but that didn’t pan out and she was instead invited to join the still-up-and-coming Led Zeppelin for the last two weeks of their second American tour in May 1969. Sander met up with the band in Detroit and stuck it out until their last performance at New York’s Fillmore East. She was so infuriated and disturbed by the now-infamous incident that occurred after that show (and described on the last page of her story) , that she didn’t write their publicity-seeking magazine profile. Instead, four years later, after the band had become international megastars, she included her account in the book Trips: Rock Life in the Sixties. According to Wall, when guitarist Jimmy Page—who had befriended Sander on the tour—was asked about her story, he admitted, “That’s not a false picture. ”" (From Shake It Up: Great American Writing on Rock and Pop from Elvis to Jay Z). Very Good in Good dust jacket .

He is not the same person as George H. Smith, a libertarian writer, or George O. Smith, another science fiction writer. There were at least three authors writing as "George H. Smith" in the 1960s; one wrote many "swamp love" paperback originals, which are often erroneously attributed to George Henry Smith. Smith himself used the pseudonyms Jeremy August, Jerry August, Don Bellmore, Ross Camra, M J Deer (with his wife, Jane Deer Smith) , John Dexter (a "house name" used by multiple authors) ; George Devlin, Robert Hadley, Jan Hudson (a "house name") , Jerry Jason, Clancy O'Brien, Alan Robinson, Holt Standish, Diana Summers, Hal Stryker, Hank Stryker, Morgan Trehune, Roy Warren, and J X Williams (a "house name") for publishers such as Avalon, Beacon, Boudoir, Brandon House, Epic, Evening Reader, France, Greenleaf, Midwood, Monarch, Notetime, Pike, Pillow, and Playtime. It is known that he wrote more than 100 novels. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good .

MIDPENINSULA FREE UNIVERSITY
The Free You January 1969: Volume 3, Num. 1: Marriage
Menlo Park, CA: Midpeninsula Free University, 1969. 1st Edition. Magazine. B&W Illustrations; This magazine is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The magazine is generally clean and bright, with just a bit of light bumping and curling to the corners. The text pages are clean and bright. This edition includes a wanted poster for Leroy Eldridge Cleaver. The Midpeninsula Free University (MFU) was one of the largest and most successful of the many free universities that sprang up on and around college campuses in the mid-1960s in the wake of the Free Speech Movement at University of California, Berkeley and the nationwide anti-war Teach-ins which followed. Like other free universities, it featured an open curriculum—anyone who paid the nominal membership fee ($10) could offer a course in anything—marxism, pacifism, candle making, computers, encounter, dance, or literature. Courses were publicized in illustrated catalogs, issued quarterly and widely distributed. It had no campus; classes were taught in homes and storefronts. Its magazine-style, illustrated newsletter, The Free You, published articles, features, fiction, poetry, and reviews contributed by both members and nonmembers. The MFU sponsored, Be-Ins, street concerts, a restaurant, a store, and was actively involved in every aspect of the flourishing counterculture on the Midpeninsula, including the anti-war movement at Stanford University." New York, NY: Warner Bros, Inc, 1970. Poster. Color Illustrations; This is a large lobby poster for the Movie Woodstock from 1970. The poster is in Very Good- condition. There are thumb tack holes to all four corners of the poster. There is a wrinkled tear to the top 1/3rd quadrant of the right side of the poster (approx. 1" long) Poster has ink stamped notation: 1SH 70"/127 on the reverse. Woodstock is a 1970 American documentary film of the watershed counterculture Woodstock Festival which took place in August 1969 near Bethel, New York. The film was directed by Michael Wadleigh. Seven editors are credited, including Thelma Schoonmaker, Martin Scorsese, and Wadleigh. Woodstock was a great commercial and critical success. It received the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Schoonmaker was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing, a rare distinction for a documentary. Dan Wallin and L. A. Johnson were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Sound. The film was screened at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival, but was not entered into the main competition. The 1970 theatrical release of the film ran 185 minutes. A director's cut spanning 224 minutes was released in 1994. Both cuts take liberties with the timeline of the festival. However, the opening and closing acts are the same in the film as they appeared on stage; Richie Havens opens the show and Jimi Hendrix closes it. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good- .
