BEROLZHEIMER, RUTH (EDITED BY)
2000 Useful Facts About Food Labor, Time and Money-Saving Hints, Advice and Suggestions. . .
Chicago, IL: Consolidated Book Company, 1941. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; This is a trade sized paperback booklet with thin, slick cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There is some edge wear and nicking to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "In 1938 Davidow moved to Chicago, where he became president of a company called Consolidated Book Publishers, which continued to publish cookbooks under the CAI imprint, most notably The American Woman’s Cookbook, which drew heavily on the Delineator material. Edited by Berolzheimer, the Institute’s new director, it was published in 1939, one year before James Beard’s first cookbook. Over 800 pages long and one of the first—if not the first—cookbooks to use four-color photography, by 1943 it had sold a million copies, and by the early 70s eight million, according to Daniels. Early chapters on technique, temperature, meal planning, and table setting give way to recipe categories as varied as toast (ten recipes) , vegetarian (peanut and carrot loaf) , food for invalids (flaxseed lemonade) , and French (including, dubiously, gnocchi). There’s chicken a la king, there’s chop suey, there’s sweetbread-and-oyster pie. There’s also a glossary of foreign—mostly French—cooking terms and a chapter on cooking with wine that includes a chart grading various French wines." (Mike Sula September 11, 2008, Reader magazine, Chicago, IL). Very Good .

SUN-MAID RAISIN GROWERS OF CALIFORNIA, Downright Delicious Sun-Maid Raisin Recipes
SUN-MAID RAISIN GROWERS OF CALIFORNIA
Downright Delicious Sun-Maid Raisin Recipes
Fresno, CA: Sun-Maid Raisin Growers of California, 0. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; This is a small format booklet with illustrated cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Near Fine condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There is some beginning rubbing to the foredges of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "In 1873, Francis T. Eisen planted an experimental vineyard of Muscat grapes on 25 acres (10 hectares) along Fancher Creek, just east of Fresno. By 1878, packaged raisins were being shipped out of the state, and by 1903, California was producing 120 million pounds of raisins a year. Packing houses quickly became a vital link between the grower and the consumer, and dozens sprouted up across the San Joaquin Valley. Employing hundreds of immigrant people, these facilities received the sun-dried raisins from growers, which they stored, processed, packaged, and shipped throughout the United States and to countries around the world. When the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, farmers and immigrants from the East settled the area for the first time, and growers were able to quickly transport products from the West to new markets. In 1872, Leland Stanford brought the Central Pacific Railroad to the San Joaquin Valley, choosing a location in present-day downtown Fresno as the rail stop, Fresno Station. Depots in surrounding communities soon followed. As the railroads expanded, so too did the area surrounding Fresno Station, attracting farmers to grow agricultural products to satisfy the increasing demand from faraway markets. Many of the families suffered due to harmful chemicals that they were faced with while working on the farms. " (from Wikipedia). Near Fine .

But a lot has changed in 40 years. Four of the original Best of Bridge ladies have died, and the remaining four—Mary Halpen, Val Robinson, Helen Miles, and Joan Wilson—are in their seventies and getting ready to retire. To keep the Best of Bridge tradition going, the ladies are passing their aprons to three women who are also friends that love to cook." (from Publishers Weekly May 29, 2015). Very Good+ .

NEW CASTLE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, Great Island Cook Book
NEW CASTLE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH
Great Island Cook Book
New Castle, NH: New Castle Congregational Church, 1985. 15th Printing. 3-ring binder. B&W Illustrations; This is a thick three ring binder with pages that have three ring hole punches. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book is in clean, bright condition and all the pages appear to be intact. The text pages are clean and bright. The main island on which the town sits is the largest of several at the mouth of the Piscataqua River and was originally called "Great Island". Settled in 1623, an earthwork defense was built on Fort Point which would evolve into Fort William and Mary (rebuilt in 1808 as Fort Constitution). Chartered in 1679 as a parish of Portsmouth, it was incorporated on May 30, 1693, and was named "New Castle" after the fort. Until 1719 it included Rye, then called "Sandy Beach", which was set off as a parish. The principal industries were trade, tavern-keeping, and fishing. There was also agriculture, using the abundant seaweed as fertilizer. Beginning on June 11, 1682, Great Island experienced a supernatural event—a lithobolia, or "Stone-Throwing Devil", recorded in a 1698 London pamphlet by Richard Chamberlain. On a Sunday night at about 10 o'clock, the tavern home of George Walton, an early settler and planter, was showered with stones thrown "by an invisible hand". (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .
