"A benefit society, fraternal benefit society or fraternal benefit order is a society, an organization or a voluntary association formed to provide mutual aid, benefit, for instance insurance for relief from sundry difficulties. Such organizations may be formally organized with charters and established customs, or may arise ad hoc to meet unique needs of a particular time and place. Many major financial institutions existing today, particularly some insurance companies, mutual savings banks, and credit unions, trace their origins back to benefit societies, as can many modern fraternal organizations and fraternal orders which are now viewed as being primarily social; the modern legal system essentially requires all such organizations of appreciable size to incorporate as one of these forms or another to continue to exist on an ongoing basis. Benefit societies may be organized around a shared ethnic background, religion, occupation, geographical region or other basis. Benefits may include financial security and/or assistance for education, unemployment, birth of a baby, sickness and medical expenses, retirement and funerals. Often benefit societies provide a social or educational framework for members and their families to support each other and contribute to the wider community.". Very Good .

This group met again in 1872 in St. Louis MO. At this meeting Dr. Bunn unveiled the rituals of the order and administered an oath to those in attendance to keep it secret. Another convention was held in Washington, DC in 1873 and Dr. Bunn was given the title of the "Most Excellent Master Artisan". Bunn was authorized to institute assemblies and start to recruit new members into the Order. The charter was signed on May 1st 1873. In its early years the Order had had a lengthy ritual that was heavily influenced by Freemasonry. This ritual had been set up by Mr. McMurray. It worked three degrees - Endentured Apprentice, fellow Workman and Perfect Artisan" (from Wikipedia). Good .

Want to know how to purify a well, make strawberry vinegar, or build and clean stoves, chimneys and furnaces? The answers all are waiting at the USC Libraries. In 1873, The New Housekeeper’s Manual: Embracing a New Revised Edition of the American Woman’s Home—coauthored by Uncle Tom’s Cabin author Harriet Beecher Stowe and her older sister Catharine Beecher—was published. Heavily referencing Biblical scriptures, the sisters’ “how-to” manual on excelling at domesticity uses science, religion, architecture, and nutrition—as well as the author’s own feminist philosophies—to emphasize the physical and spiritual health of a family. The second half of the book includes simple recipes for everything from potato soup and roast beef to such delicacies as veal cheese, souse, and tripe." (from San Francisco Chronicle). Very Good+ .
