A Corporation and a Molecule the Story of Research at Syntex
Palo Alto, CA: Syntex Corp / Sam Smidt Associates and Printing, 1966. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Paperback. B&W and Color Illustrations; This is a monograph published by the Syntex Corporation which gives a detailed description and history of the Steroid molecule and how they have adapted it to be used in a number of different pharmaceutical products, including anti-inflammatory agents and contraceptives. The monograph goes on to describe a number of different uses for steroids, pharmaceutical products the company has created and marketed, some history of the company and it's purpose and outlook, etc. A fascinating look at both a company philosophy and a early view of the subject of contraceptives from the pharmaceutical perspective. This paperback monograph is in Very Good to Near Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The covers have some edge wear, bumping and beginning rubbing, especially to the spine joints. The covers also have some waviness. The text pages are clean and bright. "If you look at a steroid in its pure form you will see a crystalline powder, white or nearly white; but a proper definition goes deeper than that. The word steroid means like a sterol. Sterols are certain solid alcohols that are abundant in animals and plants; the major sterol in man and other vertebrates is cholesterol." (from Wikipedia). Very Good .

While we sometimes associate chemical reactions with the sterile environment of the test tube and the laboratory - nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the colossal number of transformations make for a dizzying, almost incomprehensible array of new substances and energy changes that take place in our world every second of every day. In nature, chemical reactions can be much less controlled than you’ll find in the lab, sometimes far messier, and they generally occur whether you want them to or not! Whether it be a fire raging across a forest (Figure 1) , the slow process of iron rusting in the presence of oxygen and water over a period of years, or the delicate way in which fruit ripens on a tree, the process of converting one set of chemical substances (the reactants) to another set of substances (the products) is one known as a chemical reaction." (Visionlearning website) "A synthesis of advances in three major areas of atmospheric chemistry: ionospheric research, geochemistry of the troposphere and stratosphere, and photochemical reactions and resultant contamination." (book blurb). Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket .
