GARBARINI, EMMET H. (AS TOLD TO EVELYN GARBARINI), The Kennedy Wheels

The ooklet is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There is a previous owner's inked name on the front cover. The text pages are clean and bright. "The monstrous, fifty-eight foot diameter Kennedy Tailing Wheels are a one-of-a-kind creation. Although not built during the Gold Rush, these huge wooden wheels were a direct result of a Gold Rush event and are probably the most remembered artifacts of any visit to Jackson today. The wheels were built in 1914 in response to federal anti-debris laws and court cases reaching back to the 1880’s; no longer could the mines dump their wastes into the rivers and streams, polluting the water and causing serious flood dangers to the farmers in the valleys below. All mine tailings had to be impounded. As the Kennedy Mine’s impound dam was located behind two small hills and about a half a mile away from the mill, the wheels were built to lift the tailings up over the hills to the dam. Prior to receiving the rancho grant, José Joaquín Bernal had already settled in the area since 1826. Bernal named the area Santa Teresa after attributing the healing waters of the Santa Teresa Spring to Saint Teresa of Ávila, the 16th century Spanish saint. Rancho Santa Teresa quickly became an important center for Californio life in the southern Santa Clara Valley, attracting vaqueros and their families from the region with regular fiestas featuring Fandango dancing and large feasts." GREATHEAD, MRS. ESTELLE, The Story of an Inspiring Past Historical Sketch of the San Jose State Teachers College from 1862-1928
GREATHEAD, MRS. ESTELLE
The Story of an Inspiring Past Historical Sketch of the San Jose State Teachers College from 1862-1928
San Jose, CA: San Jose State Teachers College, 1928. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. There is some light bumping and rubbing to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. There are several small spots of ground-in dirt to the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. This is a history of the San Jose State Teachers College. "The school was created when the State of California took over a normal school that educated San Francisco teachers in association with that city's high school system. This school was founded in 1857 and was generally known as either the San Francisco Normal School or Minns Evening Normal School. Although the California legislative act founding the school referred to the institution as the "Normal School of the State of California," the institution was commonly referred to as the California State Normal School. The 1870 Act that moved the school to San Jose formalized the California State Normal School name. However sometimes it was referred to as San Jose State Normal School or State Normal School at San Jose. In 1871, the school moved to Washington Square Park at Fourth and San Carlos Streets in San Jose, where San José State University is still located. The original building at Washington Square Park was completed in 1872 but burned down on February 10, 1880. It was replaced by a second building in 1881, depicted in the lithograph at right. That is why "Old Blues" continue the seasonal pilgrimage to California Memorial Stadium. Few get a chance to go in belief the team is going to win for the most part it doesn't happen (there are, of course, some occasional seasons where the belief surfaces. But they have been few and far between in recent years). "Old Blues" go for the atmosphere, the social activites, and the traditions which are uniquely Cal and incorporated into those experiences, there is a never ending hope that The Bears will be victorious (which when it happens, produces the most wonderful of internal feelings)."
