DOWNEY, SHERIDAN
They Would Rule the Valley
San Francisco, CA: Sheridan Downey, 1947. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Photographs; This book is in Fine condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some beginning bumping and rubbing. The text pages are clean and bright. "In a 1947 book entitled They Would Rule the Valley, Downey argued that the farmers of the Central Valley, who controlled water rights based on state law, would come into conflict with the federal Bureau of Reclamation. Downey acknowledged that Central Valley farmers were technically in violation of the Reclamation Act of 1902, but defended these violations of Federal law as necessary because, in the context of California agriculture the Federal limitation was impractical. Downey's political views made him vulnerable. Helen Gahagan Douglas challenged him in a primary. In 1950 Downey dropped out of the race, citing ill health, and threw his support in the Democratic primary behind Manchester Boddy, the conservative and wealthy publisher of the Los Angeles Daily News. He even indicated that if Douglas won the primary, which she did, he would support Republican U. S. Representative Richard Nixon in the general election.". Fine .

"19th century, Cupertino was a small rural village at the crossroads of Stevens Creek Road and Saratoga-Mountain View Road (also known locally as Highway 9; later Saratoga–Sunnyvale Road, and then renamed to De Anza Boulevard within Cupertino city limits). For decades, the intersection was dominated on the southeast corner by the R. Cali Brothers Feed Mill, which is replaced today with the Cali Mill Plaza and City Hall. Back then, it was known as the West Side and was part of Fremont Township. The primary economic activity was fruit agriculture. Almost all of the land within Cupertino's present-day boundaries was covered by prune, plum, apricot, and cherry orchards. A winery on Montebello Ridge overlooking the Cupertino valley region was also in operation by the late 19th century. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good .

EPHEMERA [PASADENA, CA] [CALIFORNIANA] [ROSE PARADE], Group of Ephemera - Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade
EPHEMERA [PASADENA, CA] [CALIFORNIANA] [ROSE PARADE]
Group of Ephemera - Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade
Pasadena, CA, 0. Other. This group of ephemera consists of four souvenir photograph packets for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade (from the years: 1929, 1931, 1932 & 1941) along with a button featuring Michigan State from 1961-62. All four of the souvenir photographs are in Very Good+ condition. Two of the packets have been addressed (the one from 1932 includes the stamp and was mailed). The souvenir pin from 1962 is in Very Good- condition, with some rubbing, ground-in dirt and toning. "This event began as a promotional effort by Pasadena's distinguished Valley Hunt Club. In the winter of 1890, the club members brainstormed ways to promote the "Mediterranean of the West." They invited their former East Coast neighbors to a mid-winter holiday, where they could watch games such as chariot races, jousting, foot races, polo and tug-of-war under the warm California sun. The abundance of fresh flowers, even in the midst of winter, prompted the club to add another showcase for Pasadena's charm: a parade would precede the competition, where entrants would decorate their carriages with hundreds of blooms. The Tournament of Roses was born. "In New York, people are buried in snow," announced Professor Charles F. Holder at a Club meeting. "Here our flowers are blooming and our oranges are about to bear. Let's hold a festival to tell the world about our paradise." uring the next few years, the festival expanded to include marching bands and motorized floats. The games on the town lot (which was re-named Tournament Park in 1900) included ostrich races, bronco busting demonstrations and a race between a camel and an elephant (the elephant won). Reviewing stands were built along the Parade route, and Eastern newspapers began to take notice of the event. In 1895, the Tournament of Roses Association was formed to take charge of the festival, which had grown too large for the Valley Hunt Club to handle." (from Wikipedia). Very Good .

The photograph is in very clean, bright condition." The Grizzly Giant is the oldest sequoia in the Mariposa Grove, the largest giant sequoia grove in Yosemite National Park, with several hundred mature specimens. At one time, the Grizzly Giant was considered the oldest and largest tree in the world, aged between 2,000 and 3,000 years. In 2019, refined scientific dating methods resulted in a new age estimate for the Grizzly Giant: 2,995 years old (plus or minus 250 years). " (from Wikipedia) ""Max Steindel, a twenty-one-year old cellist, came in as Principal in 1912. A member of a family highly regarded in professional music circles, Steindel had an uncle and a brother in the Theodore Thomas Orchestra. Except for a short hiatus during World War I, Steindel was to remain with the Saint Louis Orchestra for over forty years." " ( Celloheaven website). Very Good+ .
