[EPHEMERA] [CALIFORNIANA] [STOCKTON, CA] [LODI, CA] [AGRICULTURE] [CANNERIES] [GROWERS], Log Book of Tomato Contracts between Various Growers and Stockton Food Products, Inc. March - August 1943 (for Tomatoes Grown in 1944)
[EPHEMERA] [CALIFORNIANA] [STOCKTON, CA] [LODI, CA] [AGRICULTURE] [CANNERIES] [GROWERS]
Log Book of Tomato Contracts between Various Growers and Stockton Food Products, Inc. March - August 1943 (for Tomatoes Grown in 1944)
Stockton, CA, 1943. Ephemera. [ephemera] A triplicate log book which gives details of tomato contracts between growers and Stockton Food Products, Inc - 25 forms in a heavy cardstock oblong log book (the triplicates only, the other copies have been removed ) signed by growers and the company in advance of the 1944 season. The contracts included how many acres to be farmed and what types of tomatoes per acre. Most of the acreage is in the Lodi, CA area. One early grower of tomatoes in the area, Newt Robinson, wrote about the crops in his biography: "Again dry years intervened and because of the increasing salinity of his irrigation water, Newt experimented with yet another crop: We found tomatoes were much more tolerant of poor quality water than were beans ... I was the first person I know of on Roberts Island or on Union Island who raised tomatoes. I think the year was 1935 or 1936. We raised those great big beefsteak. The vines grew so fast and with such vigor that they covered the row on the virgin land so we had a difficult time irrigating them on the final irrigation.". Very Good+ .
