Unusual ephemeral items having to do with Peter & Donna Thomas and their private press. "In 1976 they established a private press. At that time their goal was to create books in the tradition of the great private presses: limited editions, made of the finest materials and produced with the highest standards of quality. They printed their first book in 1978, and spent the next ten years producing "fine press" books in both full size and miniature format. To assure that the books they made reflected their intent, they always made the paper, print and bound the books completely by themselves. In the late 1980’s, concurrent with the infusion of new energy which spread through the book arts community when it was introduced to the personal computer, the Thomas’ vision of the book they wanted to create expanded beyond simply "fine press". They began to work in new formats, exploring non-traditional book structures and shaped book objects, as both limited editions and one-of-a-kind books. In 1992 they printed Good Books, a bibliography of their work. This lists over fifty titles, representing many authors and a wide range of subjects, but the Thomases are not just publishers: they are artists who work in the medium of the book." Putnam took over the business with his brothers John Bishop and Irving, renaming it G. P. Putnam's Sons. He was made president of the firm, a position he held for the next fifty-two years. In 1884 he hired 26-year-old Theodore Roosevelt as a special partner; Roosevelt would write several works published by Putnam. Like his father, Putnam was active in numerous civic, social, and business causes. He served on the executive committees of the Civil-Service Reform Association, the Free-Trade League and the Reform Club, and was a founding member of the City Club of New York. He also aggressively continued with his father's work on copyright protection for authors." (from Wikipedia). Very Good- .

This book was a project of the Industrial Arts Printing Laboratory of San Jose State College. Included is a very nice wood block print frontispiece (uncredited) . "It was not until John Swett became superintendent of public instruction in 1863 that the California school system got its stride. No statesman produced by California is entitled to greater honor than John Swett. Other statesmen have achieved great things in the field of politics, but Swett achieved great things in behalf of children who had no votes to reward him for his faithful service. In 1862 war feeling ran high in California and the loyalists organized themselves into the Union party. The party convention met in Sacramento to nominate a ticket. Some of Swett’s friends urged the young man’s name for the office of state superintendent and he finally consented to the presentation of his candidacy. The representatives of the mining and agricultural counties did not respond to his candidacy at first. They were skeptical about him, first because he came from San Francisco, and second because one of his opponents pointed out that Swett hadn’t a “classical education. ” "(Museum of the City of San Francisco). "Kitagawa Utamaro (Japanese: ? ? ? ? ?; c. 1753 – 31 October 1806) was a Japanese artist. He is one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, and is best known for his bijin okubi-e "large-headed pictures of beautiful women" of the 1790s. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects. Little is known of Utamaro's life. His work began to appear in the 1770s, and he rose to prominence in the early 1790s with his portraits of beauties with exaggerated, elongated features. He produced over 2000 known prints and was one of the few ukiyo-e artists to achieve fame throughout Japan in his lifetime. In 1804 he was arrested and manacled for fifty days for making illegal prints depicting the 16th-century military ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and died two years later. " (from Wikipedia).
