"The company's next venture was to build aircraft to fit the requirements of the new Airmail service. The first aircraft this company, Ryan Airlines, produced was called the Ryan M-1 mail plane developed in 1926. It was the first production monoplane in the country. The so-called Ryan M-1 of the 1920s is in actuality a monoplane designed and engineered by William J. Waterhouse of Glendale, California's Grand Central Airport in 1924 (Waterhouse and Royer Airplane Company). In 1925, Ryan purchased construction blueprints of the Waterhouse/Royer Monoplane "Cruzair." William Hawley Bowlus built the craft in a San Diego waterfront cannery building. Ryan painted his logo on the plane's rudder and immediately marketed it as the Ryan M-1. In an effort to disclaim plagiary, Ryan displayed his copy of the monoplane on an elevated platform at the airfield (Dutch Flat in San Diego) , sporting a large banner saying "Built in San Diego" (photo on file at San Diego Air and Space Museum, 2001 Pan American Plaza, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA 92101). Compounding and confusing the historical origins of the M-1, Ryan submitted Waterhouse's Cruzair design to the U. S. Patent Office as his own, and in 1929 Ryan was awarded "inventor" status for Waterhouse's monoplane design. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

B&W Illustrations; This is a commemorative booklet / program for the 50th Anniversary of the Groundbreaking of the Ames Research Center. The program includes the original mailing envelope and a certificate. All three items are in Very Good+ or better condition. "Ames Research Center (ARC) , also known as NASA Ames, is a major NASA research center at Moffett Federal Airfield in California's Silicon Valley. It was founded as the second National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) laboratory. That agency was dissolved and its assets and personnel transferred to the newly created National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on October 1, 1958. NASA Ames is named in honor of Joseph Sweetman Ames, a physicist and one of the founding members of NACA. At last estimate NASA Ames has over US$3.0 billion in capital equipment, 2,300 research personnel and a US$860 million annual budget. Ames was founded to conduct wind-tunnel research on the aerodynamics of propeller-driven aircraft; however, its role has expanded to encompass spaceflight and information technology. Ames plays a role in many NASA missions. It provides leadership in astrobiology; small satellites; robotic lunar exploration; the search for habitable planets; supercomputing; intelligent/adaptive systems; advanced thermal protection; and airborne astronomy. Ames also develops tools for a safer, more efficient national airspace. The center's current director is Eugene Tu.". Very Good+ .

The book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book covers have some spots of light ground-in dirt, along with some light bumping, rubbing and wear. There are several noticeable creases to the top front corner of the cover, and there is one vertical crease by the spine joint. The text pages are clean and bright. "Test flying as a systematic activity started during the First World War, at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) in the United Kingdom. An "Experimental Flight" was formed at the Central Flying School. During the 1920s, test flying was further developed by the RAE in the UK, and by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in the United States. In the 1950s, NACA was transformed into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or NASA. During these years, as work was done into aircraft stability and handling qualities, test flying evolved towards a more qualitative scientific profession. In the 1950s, test pilots were being killed at the rate of about one a week, [citation needed] but the risks have shrunk to a fraction of that because of the maturation of aircraft technology, better ground-testing and simulation of aircraft performance, fly-by-wire technology and, lately, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles to test experimental aircraft features. Still, piloting experimental aircraft remains more dangerous than most other types of flying. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good .

CHINARD, GILBERT AND EARLE RAYMOND HEDRICK
Handbook of English and French Terms for the Use of Military Aviators
Berkeley, CA: School of Military Aeronautics, 1917. 2nd Edition. Paperback. This is a small format paperback with cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There are several spots of ground-in dirt to the top edge of the front cover. The text pages are clean and bright. "In carrying out its tremendous program of preparedness in the air one of the first steps of the War Department was the establishment of schools for giving ground training to the future military aviators. The men vrho were choosing to serve in this branch were coming from all walks of civilian life, from peaceful pursuits, and practically none of them had a^y idea of military life, and much less conception of the requirements of an aviator. It was essential that these men be given a short intensive ground training in military subjects, airplanes, engines etc, before attempting to learn to fly. The War Department recognized that the large universities of the country had the organization, buildings and could quickly assemble the teaching staffs to undertake this work with a minimum of delay, and certain of these institutions were called upon to organize Ground Schools for training military aviators." Missoula, MT: Pictorial Histories, 1998. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Paperback. ISBN: 157510041X. B&W Illustrations; This is an oversized paperback book. The book is in Near Fine condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. "In the early days of aviation, any wilderness was a challenge for propeller-driven airplanes made of wood and fabric. And in 1920, there was hardly a territory more rugged and fraught with danger than Alaska. So it was that Billy Mitchell of the Army Air Service, who was always anxious to show off the power and reach of his airplanes, sent the eight-member "Black Wolf Squadron" on a month-long journey from New York to Nome, Alaska in four de Havilland DH-4 biplanes. The expedition, led by Captain St. Clair Streett, left on July 15 and reached Nome on August 24. Then it was on to Fairbanks, where, Streett wrote later in National Geographic, the old "sour-dough" settlers "could not believe that we had covered the distance from New York in 50 hours , when they had spent 18 or 20 months reaching there by way of the Yukon in the gold-rush days." For many of the spectators, it was the first time they had seen an airplane. " (from Air & Space). Near Fine .

The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is some beginning bumping and wear to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "After the war ended, some of these pilots used the skills they had mastered by barnstorming to earn a living, traveling across the country performing stunts and providing rides. [1] It was helpful that the US government was selling plentiful now-surplus Curtiss JN-4 Jenny trainer biplanes for as little as $200; [1] 90% of American World War I pilots had been trained using the Jenny. [2] It was a two-seater, so paying passengers could get their first taste of flying and wing walkers had a place to wait to perform. Barnstormers would often land in a local farmer's field and negotiate to put on a show there, hence the "barn" in barnstorming. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

Our Air Age Speeds Ahead
Washington D. C.: National Geographic Society, 1948. Magazine. B&W Illustrations; This is a DISBOUND article from National Geographic Magazine. This is the actual article, not a photocopy. The text pages are clean, bright and without chips, tears, discoloration or wear. They do, however, have the necessary staple holes where staples were removed. The article consists of 12 double-sided pages of text and photographs (23 black and white photographs). The article is filled with tidbits of information regarding the newest types of aircraft and how they were used in 1948 including public transport (even sleeper flights for transatlantic passengers) , helicopters being used for crop spraying, rockets, postal service, bombers and other military planes, and others. While the commentary is not truly in-depth, it does cover a good deal of information and has a good slant on how the common man viewed aviation and the new technology that was coming along in 1948. There are nifty photos of some experimental planes --including the -Flying Pancake- and the -Flying Motorcycle- and some of the heavy bombers like the YB-49 and the XB-47. Overall, a very good copy.. "Harry Combs (27 January 1913 – 23 December 2003) was a United States aviation pioneer and author of many fiction and non-fiction books from Denver, Colorado. Harry Combs "lived and breathed the Golden and Jet Ages of aviation" according to the governmental U. S. Centennial of Flight Commission, in a 2003 press release. The release stated that Combs saw his first airplane at the age of four-and-a-half and also in his youth was influenced by the book "Diary of an Unknown Aviator"—a World War I chronicle by Elliot White Springs. Combs' father, Albert, was shot down twice in World War I, and was said to have warned his son never to set foot in an airplane. Nonetheless, the young Combs paid $2.50 for a ride in a mail plane at the age of 13; then, two years later, inspired by an advertisement for $99 flying lessons, made his way to St. Louis, MO for three hours of flight instruction, soloing immediately thereafter.".
