LA CITTA DI ROMA Ovvero Breve Descrizione di Questa Superba Citta
Roma (Rome, Italy), Venanzio Monaldini et al 1779, hb. Ill.: sixteen folding maps. Bound in original boards; spine strengthened with japon paper. 12mo, pp. 444. "Con due piante generali, e quelle de'suoi quattordici Rioni, incisi in rame per comodo de'Forestieri."
¶ Two volumes ("parte") in one. The text is in Italian. No author identified. WorldCat has two distinct listings for this title: one showing the author as Venanzio Monaldini, an Italian, and the other as Dominique Magnan, a Frenchman. Monaldini was a publisher and bookseller active in Rome during the 18th and early 19th centuries. He is shown as one of three co-publishers of this title. Magnan (1731-1796) is not. He is, however, known to be the author of several other similar works, published between 1765 to 1777. One reference describes him as a "numismatic archaeologist". However, the edition with Magnan as the author is usually described as being four volumes in one large quarto volume, with 44 plates and maps. Our title has 16 finely etched copperplate folding maps, but no plates. We suspect that our copy is a pirated edition of Magnan's work. It is in the original boards, now well-worn. The leather spine had a vertical crack, from head to foot, but this has now been expertly repaired and covered over with with matching japon paper, and a paper spine label. The front hinge was cracked, and the endpapers were beyond salvation, so the hinge has been repaired and the endpapers replaced. The comprehensive index at the end of the book has some early ink interlineations and annotations. The text is otherwise remarkably clean and the folding maps are really quite nice. Overall, a good, to good plus, copy of this rather rare work.

ANBUREY, THOMAS
JOURNAL D'UN VOYAGE FAIR DANS L'INTERIEUR DE L'AMERIQUE SEPTENTIONALE [Travels Through the Interior Parts of America]
Paris, La Villette, Libraire 1793, hb. Ill.: map, engravings. Complete two volume set bound in 3/4 leather over marbled boards. 8vo, pp. 336, 453. Sabin 1369. Wagner-Camp 226.
¶ Anburey was a British soldier and the author of a disputed narrative of his travels in North America from 1776 to 1781. He sailed from Cork in 1776 in charge of Irish recruits of the 47th regiment, and served under General John Burgoyne in the Battle of Saratoga. Taken prisoner, he was sent back to Britain in 1781. He stayed in the army one more year; then returned to private life. Anburey wrote "Travels Through the Interior Parts of America", which was first published in London in 1789, and then again in London in 1791 as a "New Edition". It is written as a series of 79 letters addressed "to my dear friend" and described by its author as "the rapid effusions of a confessedly inexperienced writer". The book proved popular in England and was translated into French "et enrichi de notes par M. Noel ancien Professeur de belles-lettres au College de Louis-le-grand" (in the 1793 edition). The first letter is dated August, 1776, and the last December, 1781. Volume I contains three nicely-done copper engravings: a detailed folded plan of a fort, a folded view of "Les Americains y mirent le Feu a l'approche de l'Armee Burgoyne", and a striking image of an "Indian warrior". Volume II contains a folding map of Anburey's travels. It appears these volumes were re-bound sometime in the 19th century. The first original blank page of volume I contains some booksellers' notes (in pencil). The contents show some foxing and the paper is a bit rolled. The binding is tight, but the leather is quite rubbed. Overall, a good set. The text is in French.
