THE MANITOBA READERS / First Reader
London, Edinburgh, etc., Thomas Nelson and Sons ND (c. 1910), hb. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations. Small 8vo, pp. 96. "Authorized by the Advisory Board for use in Public Schools in Manitoba".
¶ Very much like its American counterpart, the "Dick and Jane" readers, but published much earlier (c. 1910). The central characters are Frank, Nellie, Dora and Tom, and a horse named Darby. The vocabulary is as simplistic, viz. "I see a ball. I see a tree. I see my cap. Do you see my cap?" with images of a ball, cap and tree. Lesson 75 shows a photo of boys playing baseball (with accompanying story to read): 83 lessons in all. Bound in original illustrated brown cloth, now showing some wear and soiling. Front endpaper absent amd hinge weak. Some soiling to contents but no childish scribblings. A fair, to good, copy of the scarcest of all Manitoba readers.
