ARMITAGE, ALBERT B. / WITH HAND-WRITTEN LETTER FROM FRIDTJOF NANSEN ABOUT THIS BOOK
TWO YEARS IN THE ANTARCTIC Being a Narrative of the British National Antarctic Expedition / With Illustrations and a Map
London, Edward Arnold 1905, 1st edition, . Ill.: map, b&w photos, illusts. Bound in original illustrated green cloth. Royal 8vo, pp. xix, 315. First edition, first state, With 16 pages of dated (October, 1905) advertisements at end of book, following the folded map.
¶ Albert Borlase Armitage (1864-1943) was navigator and second-in-command of Capt. Robert Scott's "Discovery" expedition of 1901-04. Armitage was born in Scotland and, in 1878, he enlisted as a cadet aboard the Royal Navy's training ship, H.M.S. Worcester. Upon completing his training, he gained a number of years experience aboard ocean liners. In 1884 he joined the Jackson-Harmsworth Expedition to Franz-Josef Land. By 1897, when he left the expedition, he had risen to the rank of second-in-command. In 1895, he participated in the rescue of Fridtjof Nansen and his men. His chief accomplishment on the Scott expedition was his first season's success in the western mountains and the ascent of Victoria Land, where he became the first person to walk on the polar plateau. Rosove notes that this title "exposes lighter and anecdotal sides of the expedition and contains occasional comment on the men's characters. [He] avoided divulging his personal feelings about Scott but in his autobiography was openly uncomplimentary to him." Our copy is in the original binding, which has been professionally re-backed, and the original endpapers have been replaced. Very light soiling to some page corners, and to the bottom edge of the text block. Rosove 17.A1.a (who describes this title as "scarce"), Renard 50.
