CARLING, JOHN R.
The Weird Picture
London,, Ward Lock & Co Limited, 1905. 1st edition. Hardcover. pp. 308, ads.8vo,,Bound in original black cloth blocked in blind, red and gilt,The front board is 'weirdly' decorated by a border of stamped squares, alternately in blind and red, with the title and author's name stamped in gilt and the top. The binding appears to be designed by the Boston book designer, Amy Sacker (1872-1965). This is the first British edition. This title was also published in the U.S. in the same year, by Little, Brown, and apparently wih the same binding (although the Ward, Lock edition was printed in England). Carling, a now long-forgotten writer of historical romances and mysteries, is the author of about seven other books. Hubin lists three, including this title, as mysteries. The boards are bumped and show some rubbing to the extremities, especially at the board tips, which are also bumped. There is a bit of soiling to the rear board. The front free endpaper has been removed, and the front hinge is now tender. The binding is a bit dry. Overall, still in good condition. No dust jacket. Ill.: Cyrus Cuneo illustrations.

CARR, JOHN DICKINSON
It Walks by Night
New York City and London,, Harper & Brothers, 1930. First edition. Hardcover. pp. 328. Small 8vo. Bound in original dark blue cloth with light blue lettering. Our copy has a small goudge to the lower right of the front board, near the board edge. There is some very light spotting to the front board, noticeable when the book is held to the light and tilted back and forth. There is some slight general scuffing and soiling to the cloth. The endpapers are clean and tight. The contents are clean, and free of former owner's markings. Altogether, a nice copy in good plus, to very good, condition. No dust jacket. A Harper's 'Sealed Mystery' book. Publication code 'A-E' (January, 1930) on copyright page. The first book by the master of the locked-room mystery, the principles of which are described in this book: the room in which the murder was committed 'had no secret entrances; the murderer was not hiding anywhere in the room; he did not go out by the window; he did not go out by the door .. Yet a murderer had beheaded his victim there.' Carr (1905-1977) wrote over seventy mysteries.
