Second Contingent Military District No. 10 1915
Winnipeg, MB, Gordon R. Gibbons, 1915. 1st printing. Wraps.Small folio,,,No author is credited, but it was probably Gordon Gibbons, who was also the publisher. See Peel (3d) 4128. The Introduction bears a facsimile signature (i.e. signed in the plate) by Winnipeg mayor R. D. Waugh. This is an unpaginated record of all the enlisted men, and officers, of the contingent, mainly from Winnipeg, who were sent overseas to 'fight the Hun' in 1915. Following the Introduction is a photograph of Sir Sam Steele, 'Major-General commanding 2nd Canadian Expeditionary Force'. A facsimile of his signature appears under his portrait. WorldCat suggests Gibbons is the author and locates only four copies of the actual publication in institutional libraries (there are also five microfiche holdings). The last 24 pages of the book contain an acknowledgement of all the commercial supporters of the publication, as well as many illustrated advertisements, including a full-page ad for Eaton's Department Store, with a magnificant photo of its flagship Winnipeg store, which had just opened. The embossed and printed stiff card covers have, as one might expect after 100 years, separated from the stapled text block. They are a bit worn and soiled, but still in good condition and quite presentable. The contents are quite intact, unmarked and in very good condition. This is an exceptionally scarce item, and particularly valuable for military or genealogical researchers given that there are photos, names and ranks for each member of the contingent. This small folio measures 31.5 x 23.5 cm. Referenced in Cooke, 'Canadian Military Experience' (bibliography), p. 207. Ill.: black-and-white photographs. Issued 'In commemoration of the Second Regiment going to the front from Military District No. 10, Canada 1915.'.
