The Court of Holyrood. An Old Story.
Edinburgh, Alexander Macredie, 1825. 3rd edition. Hardcover. pp. 194.8vo,,Bound in original paper-covered boards,A novel about Mary, Queen of Scots, with a short Preface signed by 'The Authors'. Some uncertainty appears to exist (most apparently amongst book dealers offering for sale copies of this title) as to the dates of publication of the first, second and third editions. Part of this confusion is engendered, no doubt, by the 1826 issue of the Literary Gazette which notes this title as having been 'just published'. In fact, an earlier edition was published in 1822 under the title 'The Court of Holyrood, Fragments of an Old Story.' by Macredie, Skeely, a predecessor of the publisher of the 1825 third edition. There is no easily discernible record of when, or by whom, the first edition was published. What is certain to us is that our copy is designated as the 'Third Edition' and bears the date of 1825 at the foot of the title page. The original plain boards are present but partially detached. The paper spine covering is absent. There is a bookplate from Colquhoun's Circulating Library, of Edinburgh, affixed to the inside of the front board. The stitching of the text block is loose but holding. The contents shows some light foxing, but are otherwise unmarked and remain perfectly readable. A poor, to fair, copy. .

Recollections of Eton. By an Etonian. With Illustrations by Sydney P. Hall
New York City, Harper & Brothers, 1870. Wraps. pp. 126, ads.8vo,,,A scarce and unusual item, written as a novella in a style which precedes, but is similar to, 'Tom Brown's Schooldays' (first published in 1858 and again in an 1885 edition also illustrated by Sydney Hall). It must have been fairly popular with American readers as Harper's 1880 annual catalog still lists it for sale, and still in paper wraps (as is our copy). Harcourt's ''Eton Bibliography' notes that this title was first published in 1825 as one of a collection of Eton-related novellas; and then again in 1842 as an edited version of only 45 pages in Hood's 'New Monthly Magazine and Humorist', and again in 1864 by Bracebridge, and finally in 1870 by Chapman and Hall (presumably with somewhat larger type as the entry indicates 362 pages. Our offering, and the 1870 London edition, would appear to be the only ones with the delightful Sydney Hall illustrations. It is curious that Harcourt does not record the Harper edition. Our copy is in the original printed paper wraps, with a full-page advertisement for three of Harper's magazines on the back cover and a two-page detailed list of 'Harper's Library of Select Novels' preceding the title page. The novella is divided into two parts: 'The Lower Boy' and 'The Upper Boy', both of 14 chapters. The covers are soiled, the spine heavily chipped, and the page edges ragged. There are spots of foxing and soiling in the text which remains, however, perfectly readable. Still a good copy. The author is not identified by there are suggestions that it was Charles Frederick Johnstone, about whom very little, if anything, is known. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations. The rather small type is set in double columns.

ABRAHAMS, PETER
The Path of Thunder
London, Faber and Faber, 1952. Hardcover. pp. 262.Small 8vo,,Bound in orange cloth with gilt lettering to spine,From the dust jacket flap: 'Peter Abrahams made history in the development of the English novel. A South African negro, born (1919) in the slums of Johannesburg, he uses the English language 'like an angel''. This title was actually written in 1946 and first published by Harper's, in the U. S. in 1948. Either the political exigencies of the time, or the delicacy of the subject-matter, inhibited its publication in Britain until 1952. The author went on to greater international success with 'A Wreath for Udomo' (1956). Throughout the greater part of his creative life, most of his work was produced in exile. His last novel was 'The View from Coyaba' (1985). The dust jacket is not price-clipped. It has a thumbnail-sized piece missing from the base of the spine, the absence of which has caused the foot of the spine of the book to become sunned, or faded. There is a smaller piece of the jacket missing from the top of the spine. There are several closed tears, and some light soiling and creasing. Overall, the jacket is still in good condition. The book has a bit of shelf wear, and some slight soiling, but is otherwise clean and tight internally. It is in very good condition. .

[JOSEPH ADDISON AND RICHARD STEELE]
The Spectator; with a Biographical and Critical Preface, and Explanatory Notes / in Four Volumes
London, Routledge, Warne, et al, 1860.12mo,,Complete four volume set nicely bound in 3/4 leather,Each 'paper' or 'number' was approximately 2,500 words long, and the original run of 'The Spectator' consisted of 555 numbers. In the first edition, these were collected into seven volumes. The paper was revised, without the involment of Steele, in 1714, appearing thrice weekly for six months, and these papers when collected formed the eigth volume. (Wikipedia). It is observed in the Preface in volume I of our offering that 'Of all the works that have been written in the English language, the series of Essays under the title 'The Spectator' has undoubtedly had the greatest influence in reforming the manners, and correcting the vices of the English people.' The extremities of each volume are rubbed, and the marbled paper of the boards shows some scuffing. Notwithstanding the bindings are tight and the contents are exceptionally bright and unmarked. The set, as a whole, looks quite pleasing on the shelf. 'The Spectator' was a daily publication issued in London from 1711 to 1712 by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele.

P. TERENTII [TERENCE] [PUBLIUS TERENTIUS AFER]
Comoediae Sex, Cum Interpretatione Donati E/T Calphurnii, Et Commentario Perpetuo Curavit Arn. Henr. Westerhovius.
The Hague, Holland, Isaacum Vander Kloot, 1732. Hardcover. pp. 1322, 46.Very thick 8vo,,Title page printed in red and black with vignette,Terence (died 159 BC?) was a Roman writer of comedy. He wrote six plays during his short life: 'Andria', 'Hecyra', 'Heauton timorumenos', Eunuchus', 'Phormio' (from which the expression 'fortis fortuna adiuvat' is derived ['fortune favours the brave']), and 'Adelphoe'. They were widely known and studied in the Middle Ages, and much read in England in the sixteenth century. Terence's influence can be traced in early English comedy and again in the comedy of manners of the Restoration (Oxford Companion to Classical Literature). This volume is bound in contemporary mottled calf with gilt decorated spine and boards. Rear hinge is weak but still intact. Front hinge cracked: now close to detaching from text block. Overall, the binding is scuffed and rubbed. Marbled endpapers with old armorial bookplate on front pastedown, the bookplate being that of the Rev. Jasper Hume Nicolls (1818-1877) who, in 1845, was appointed the first Principal of Bishop's College (now Bishop's University) in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Contents clean, with slight age-darkening and a few early marginal notations. It would be a simple matter for a competent bookbinder to strengthen the joints and repair the hinges, while retaining the original binding. Ill.: copper plate frontispiece.

AINSWORTH, W. HARRISON
Jack Sheppard a Romance
Leipzig, Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1846. Hardcover. pp. vi, 458. 12mo, First published in book form in England in 1839, with illustrations by Cruikshank, this is a copyright edition, published with a Tauchnitz engraving of the author. The binding is unique - probably one-of-a-kind. Bound in 3/4 dark brown morocco, with what appear to be 19th century marbled swirl paper on the boards, and hand-painted endpapers (reminiscent of endpapers produced by the Graphic Press, Ottawa). The boards are heavy, for the size of the book, with raised bands to the spine, and blind-stamped devices, t.e.g. The leather is noticeably rubbed, but the binding is still tight. The paper on the boards also appears rubbed, but without any serious abrasions. The contents are clean and unmarked, save for a small, neat, ink name and date on second ffep, and remains of (careless) earlier bookseller's remarks on the same page. Internally, the binding is slightly stretched, but nothing untoward. Overall, the book is in good plus condition. Ill.: frontispiece of author.
