HARRIS, LAURIE LANZEN (ED.)
Nineteenth-Century Literary Criticism
Detroit, MI, Gale Research Company, 1981. 1st edition. Hardcover.Heavy 4to,,,'Excerpts from Criticism of the Works of Novelists, Poets, Playwrights, Short Story Tellers, and Other Creative Writers Who Lived between 1800 and 1900, from the First Published Critical Appraisals to Current Evaluations.' This is a successor series to the publisher's two other literary series: Contemperory Literary Criticism and Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism'. The author list for each volume of Nineteenth-Century Literary Criticism is carefully compiled to represent a variety of genres and nationalities. The length of each author's entry is intended to represent the author's critical reception in English. Each entry contains an historical overview of the critical response to the author's work; early criticism is presented to indicate initial responses, later selections represent any rise or decline in the author's literary reputation. Entries are intended to be a definitive overview and approximately 30 authors are included in each 600-page volume. This run contains 27 volumes, from volume I to volume 29, lacking volumes 12 and 13 only. This is an ex-library set, with usual markings, and each volume shows some shelf wear, consistent with use as a library reference book. However, contents appear clean and tight throughout. Altogether, a fabulous reference source for the student of ninetenth-century literature. We can arrange to ship this set at a surprisingly modest cost to any North American destination. .
