A Savage Club Souvenir
Privately Printed, 1916. 1st edition. Hardcover. pp. xv, 244.8vo,,Bound in original woven gray-green cloth with gilt emblem,According to Andrew Halliday, who was elected a joint Honorary Secretary at the first annual meeting in 1858, 'The Savage Club was formed to supply the want which Dr. Samuel Johnson and his friends experienced when they founded the Literary Club. A little band of authors, journalists and artists felt the need of a place of reunion where, in their hours of leisure, they might gather together and enjoy each other's society, apart from the publicity of that which was known in Johnson's time as the coffee house, and equally apart from the chilling splendour of the modern club.' This edition, one of only 500 copies printed, 'brings together some brief recollections and sketches by members'. It is a scarce item, seldom seen in its original presentation, although now unfortunately available as one of those abominable print upon demand concoctions (lacking, no doubt, the many excellent illustrations which grace this volume). Ill.: black-&-white illustrations. Boards sunned, with light wear to extremities. Binding a bit dry & sl. stressed. Contents unmarked. A good to good plus copy.

Prepared for the press by Geoffrey Scott, whose 'duty has here been confined (except in Vol. VI) to establish the text and chronology of the documents; to classify them with a view to the special character of this edition; and to provide some brief explanatory prefaces.' BOSWELL, JAMES [GEOFFREY SCOTT, EDITOR]
The Journal of James Boswell / Love-Letters of James Boswell and Margaret Montgomerie
[Privately printed], 1930. Hardcover. pp.iv, 264.Larger 4to,,,The first publication of Boswell's private papers, which had, since Boswell's death in 1785, lain locked in a cabinet sequestered in the estate of Lord Talbot de Malahide, until the copyright to them was acquired by Lieut. Col. Isham, 'as a result of which this long-shut gateway into the eighteenth century was finally unlocked'. Prepared for the press by Geoffrey Scott, whose 'duty has here been confined (except in Vol. VI) to establish the text and chronology of the documents; to classify them with a view to the special character of this edition; and to provide some brief explanatory prefaces.' The printer was William Edwin Rudge. After printing, the type was distributed. This is volume 8 of an eighteen volume set, and contains not only the love letters (some in facsimile) but also '..documents relative to their courtship and marriage.' With an Introduction, and Editorial and Textural Note. The book is bound in red paper over boards, with a paper spine label. The spine is a trifle sunned, with hand-painted library accession numbers at the foot. There are no other library markings. There is a moisture stain to the top outside corners of the pastedowns, which has offset to the facing endpapers. This defect may have been due to a production error, in the application of the glue, as there is no other evidence of moisture damage to the book - the contents are pristine. The binding is otherwise clean and tight, if slightly bumped at the corners. Overall, in very good condition. (We have other individual volumes available.). Ill.: handwriting facsimiles. The book designed by Bruce Rogers and printed in a limited edition of 570 copies, of which this is copy number 506.
