BOYS' ADVENTURE STORIES
London, Sunshine Press ND (c. 1935), 1st edition, hb. Ill.: Colour plates, line drawings. Small 4to, Unpaginated.
¶ A very scarce title in the Juvenile collecting genre. No copies currently for sale, and neither WorldCat nor COPAC lists any holdings. No date of puiblication shown, but there is an inscription on the half title page: "Georgie from Billy H. / Xmas. 1935". The book is hard bound with glossy paper over the boards, the front board showing a full-colour illustration of two boys sliding down a hill on a toboggan. The image is repeated on the dust jacket, included with this book. The book is illustrated with four colour plates (all present, including one by Cyrus Cuneo) and with line drawings throughout, and contains seven stories written to excite the imagination of young readers, e.g. "The Secret of the Vault", "A Prisoner in Peking", "A Crocodile Adventure", etc. The authorship of each article is individually attributed. The text is printed on rather inferior news stock and now shows a bit of age-toning. The plates are printed on glossy stock, and are fine. The boards show rubbing at the edges. The binding is stressed, with separation beginning at about the middle of the book, but it still is quite intact. Other than the inscription, there is no marking to the text. The dust jacket has an open tear near the base of the spine and several large closed tears. We have repaired the jacket with archival quality tape and encased it in clear acetate.

[WILLIAM F. CODY]
BUFFALO BILL AND THE SCALP HUNTERS [bound together with] BUFFALO BILL AND THE HIDDEN TREASURE
London, Geo. Newnes ND, . 12mo, pp. 64.
¶ This is title No. 1 in the Newnes' "New Redskin Library". Bound in original illustrated stiff paper wrappers, the front cover showing Buffalo Bill clubbing an Indian with his Winchester. Advertisement on the inside of the cover for "Tit-Bits" / "Big Cash Prizes Every Week". Covers show some wear but colour still bright, hinges tight, and content unmarked. A good plus copy of a scarce title. WorldCat does not show this title, but a different one (in microfilm): "Buffalo Bill's Rival, or, the scalp hunter of the Niobrarah", published in 1907 or 1914 (two dates given) by Street and Smith of New York City. No entries for this title come up on COPAC and no copies currently listed for sale. The William F. Cody Collection in the McCracken Library, at The University of Illinois, does show a holding for this title, with no publication date, as well as two copies of the "Niobrarah" title, giving publication dates of 1907 and 1914. The Winter 2011 results of Comic Books Auctions Ltd shows that a copy of this title (which they say was published in 1926) sold, along with Robin Hood Library No. 1, for 96 GBP, plus buyer's premium.

BALLANTYNE, R. M.
THE FIRE BRIGADE or Fighting the Flames / A Tale
New York City, John W. Lovell Company ND, hb. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations. Bound in original decorated metallic -blue cloth. Small 8vo, pp. viii, 420. All plates present and placed as called for in List of Illustrations.
¶ Pasted to the inside of the front cover is a (publisher's?) statement that this is a "Sample Volume", and lists four other Ballantyne titles. However, the text appears complete - this is certainly not a salesman's sample, or "dummy", but a complete book. There is no date of publication, and the four pages of publisher's ads at the end of the book are of little help. The first edition of this book was in 1867, under the title "Fighting the Flames", published by James Nisbet & Co., London, who were the exclusive British publisher's of Ballantyne's books. (see Eric Quayle, "Collector's Book of Boy' Stories"). The earliest American edition appears to have been published by Lippincott in 1874. We also note an undated Belford, Clarke (Chicago) edition, probably published in the 1880s, and an undated Philadelphia edition, by Porter, also from the 1880s (but undated). We conclude that our copy was also published in the 1880s, although we can find no reference to this publisher's edition in WorldCat. Our copy shows wear, especially to the board edges, and some soiling. There is some light foxing to the margins, and the binding is a bit stressed at pp. 246/247. Overall, a good copy.
