THE CANADIAN BRIDE'S REFERENCE BOOK
Winnipeg, MB, Merton Corporation Limited 1930, 1st edition, hb. Royal 8vo, pp. 203.
¶ A rather scarce item: no copies currently for sale, or listed as being held in the collections of any subscriber to the WorldCat service. This publication was most likely offered in several major Canadian cities, full-page advertisements for local merchants being bound-in. With this copy, the ads are (obviously) for Winnipeg merchants such as Manitoba Telephone Systems ("Her most valued treasure in the New Life will be the Extension telphone"), E. Nesbitt, City of Winnipeg Hydro Electric System ("A Slave to House Work? Never - with these to help you), Winnipeg Silver Plate Company, Dainty White Manufacturing Company, Lake of the Woods Milling Co. Ltd., Kleerex Manufacturing Company, Vit-O-Net Corporation "Vito-O-Net - The Electric Health Blanket"), etc. The book is otherwise filled with useful articles, recipes, and nuggets of knowledge without which no wife should be. The book is bound in faux leather. The boards are rubbed and scuffed. Internally clean and tight: a good, to good plus, copy.

REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE NEW ENGLAND SOCIETY FOR THE SUPPRESSION OF VICE
Boston, MA, 1882, 1st printing, . An original four-page printed report with printed insert. 8vo, Outside pages soiled, esp. at margins. A few creases. Insert sl. worn. Overall, both documents in good, or better, condition.
¶ The New England Society for the Suppression of Vice (NESSV) was founded in Boston in 1878 by a group of Boston residents following a speech given by Anthony Comstock (who founded a similar society in New York in 1873). The NESSV was mainly concerned with the censorship or banning (hence the term "Banned in Boston") of books and public performances which are deemed by the Society to be unsuitable for the public. Their mission statement declares that the Society exists for "the suppression of all agencies tending to corrupt the morals of youth. We do this by the most effective means - moral or legal." The NESSV subsequently changed is name to the "New England Watch and Ward Society", and then again, in 1957, to the "New England Citizens Crime Commission". It ceased to function in 1975. Our offering is a rare original copy of one of the Society's earliest reports, printed less than four years after the NESSV was formed. In it, Frederick Baylies Allen, the Society's Secretary, sets out the accomplishments of the Society for the past year (some of which are quite remarkable, especially to those of us engaged in the trade of selling books). The Secretary's Report is followed by a financial statement, and then a list of officers and committee members. The insert contains a solicitation for financial donations to the NESSV. WorldCat reports one holding (Harvard) of a document bearing this title, but it is not clear whether it is an annual report, and in any event, in which form (original, microfiche, e-book, etc.) it is being held.

THE YOUNG LADY'S POCKET LIBRARY, or PARENTAL MONITOR

The binding is still sturdy but shows wear. The text block has been trimmed at the corners (not affecting text) and several signatures are standing proud but nothing is loose. Some age-toning and foxing consistent with age, but the text is perfectly readable.

¶ First published in 1864, and then virtually every year thereafter until 1905; often several times a year, indicating the great popularity of this title. Our offering is the 22nd edition of the first series (volume I), virtually unchanged from the third edition, and the ninth edition of the second series (volume II). No author is shown, but it is generally acknowledged to be James Hain Friswell (1825-1878), a British author of essays and several novels. The binding of our volumes is signed "Dawson Bros." and features gilt rules to the boards, with florets in the corners. The spine is in compartments, with a floral ornamentation and morocco spine labels. All edges are gilt and there is a silk ribbon marker. The boards are a bit rubbed at the edges. The spine of volume I has a small abrasion, and the rear board shows some light sunning. Contents clean and tight. Two small stains to front board of volume II, with similar edge rubbing.
