Bristol, UK, J. W. Arrowsmith 1902 to 1904, 1st edition, hb. Ill.: engraved frontispieces. 8vo,
¶ The collections of Vincent Stuckey Lean of "proverbs (English & foreign), folk lore, and superstitions, also compilations towards dictionaries of proverbial phrases and words, old and unused." "An immense collection of proverbs, folklore, aphorisms, local sayings, English and foreign, Cockney and provincial, traced as far as possible to their sources, and provided with most elaborate references.." Bound in vellum-like half cloth over red cloth boards with gilt spine lettering. Note: this is a made-up set, as it originally lacked volume II, part II, when the other four volumes came into our possession. We located a copy of the missing volume, which is the same edition and binding, but regretably not in the same condition; being ex-library with considerable wear and soiling to the cloth. Nonetheless, the set is now complete. Other than the aforementioned volume, the remaining volumes show some wear, light soiling, and spotting, but the bindings are tight and the contents clean. Clipping from book auction catalogue for this set tabbed-in to inside rear board of first volume. Originally issued in a set of five volumes in four, and limited to 500 copies.
