HOCKING, SILAS K.
Sea-Waif: A Tale of the Cornish Cliffs
London, Frederick Warne and Co. ND (1882). Hardcover. pp. viii, 274.12mo,,Bound in original illustrated red cloth with all edges gilt,Silas Kitto Hocking (1850-1935) was a Cornish novelist and Methodist preacher. This title, one of many he wrote, was first published in 1882. There is no date of publication for our copy, which is not uncommon for books published in this period, even first editions, but there is an 1883 inscription in the book, so if our copy is not a first edition, it is a very early printing, indeed. The boards are bevelled. The spine is a bit sunned but otherise there is virtually no soiling and the exterior of the book is in remarkably good condition. Tiny bookseller's 'ticket' to inside rear board. Both hinges are cracked but binding holding nicely. Name of 'E. A. Wadsworth' neatly rubber-stamped to top of two preliminary blank pages. Contents otherwise unmarked and very bright. Twenty-two page publisher's catalogue at end of book. A most handsome copy. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations. Inscription on preliminary page: 'To dear Eleanor / From her loving friend / Mrs. Denham / 1883.'.
