Ink name on third blank prelim. Hinge startings and binding a bit shaken but holding. No half title page (as there was in the British edition, but it is not clear if there was one in the Canadian edition). Contents clean. A good copy. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations. The earliest printing of this title lacks the mention of the three campaign maps in the list of illustrations, which our copy has; thus this is a subsequent printing of the first edition. See Newbolt 107.1, notes 2 and 3. The boards appear to have a light water stain, causing a slight bleaching of the red cloth, but not affecting the image or gilt lettering. Ink gift inscription and small label on front free endpaper. Hinges tight, although binding very slightly sprung (as is typical with every first edition copy of this title we have seen). Contents unmarked. A good, to good plus, copy. Ill.: maps, b&w illustrations. Illustrated by Wal Paget. Three pages of maps. Ending with 32 pages of ads. All edges burnished olive-green.

True to the Old Flag a Tale of the American War of Independence

London, Blackie & Son, Limited, ND (1884). Hardcover. pp. 390.Thick 8vo,,,This title was first published by Blackie in 1884 (Newbolt 19.1). This is the Canadian edition, published after 1890, showing the Canadian publishers Copp Clark and William Briggs (both of Toronto). The design on the front board was obviously chosen to appeal to Canadian audiences, as it depicts a soldier (?) dressed in winter garb firing a musket while strapped on his back are a pair of - what else? - snowshoes. All the image lacks to be complete as a Canadian cliche is a beaver and a maple leaf. It also lacks three of the illustrations, but all maps and plans are present. The binding shows wear and the rear board is spotted from moisture. Front hinge cracked and lacks all preliminary pages to title page, otherwise complete (except for aforementioned illustrations). A few spots to text. The is a fair reading or placeholder copy of a relatively rare edition, and priced accordingly. Ill.: twelve Gordon Browne plates.

True to the Old Flag a Tale of the American War of Independence

'This is one of the most important of Henty's contibutions to historical fiction as it gives, alone of all contemporary writers, the British side of the War of American Independence, and is taken from the best authentic accounts..' (Farmer). Although this title was first published in 1884 (Newbolt 19.1), this copy is a later printing, published after 1890 (as deduced from the designation of Blackie & Sons as a limited company). With twelve full-page plates in correct order, and six full-page maps in correct order. Bound in decorated olive green cloth over bevelled boards, with image on front board of British soldier holding flag and sabre, while standing over fallen (American?) soldier and flag. All edges stained green. Thirty-two pages of ads at end. The boards show some wear at the corners and the extremities. The gilt and red blocked illustrations and lettering to the front board and to the spine are bright and in very good condition. The hinges are cracked but holding, and the text block is a bit shaken with a separation starting between pages 176/177. Plate facing page 180 almost detached. Former owner's name and date of Christmas, 1891, written on second blank page. Still an attractive copy in good, to good plus, condition. Ill.: twelve Gordon Browne plates. With six battle plans.
