'This is one of the most important of Henty's contibutions to historical fiction as it gives, alone of all contemporary writers, the British side of the War of American Independence, and is taken from the best authentic accounts..' (Farmer). Although this title was first published in 1884 (Newbolt 19.1), this copy is a later printing, published after 1890 (as deduced from the designation of Blackie & Sons as a limited company). With twelve full-page plates in correct order, and six full-page maps in correct order. Bound in decorated olive green cloth over bevelled boards, with image on front board of British soldier holding flag and sabre, while standing over fallen (American?) soldier and flag. All edges stained green. Thirty-two pages of ads at end. The boards show some wear at the corners and the extremities. The gilt and red blocked illustrations and lettering to the front board and to the spine are bright and in very good condition. The hinges are cracked but holding, and the text block is a bit shaken with a separation starting between pages 176/177. Plate facing page 180 almost detached. Former owner's name and date of Christmas, 1891, written on second blank page. Still an attractive copy in good, to good plus, condition. Ill.: twelve Gordon Browne plates. With six battle plans.
