HENTY, G. A.
Among Malay Pirates. A Tale of Adventure and Peril.
New York City, A. L. Burt Company, ND (c. 1902). Hardcover. pp. 295, ads.Small 8vo,,,This title consists of one novella (the title piece) and five short stories. It was first published in book form by Hurst & Co. New York, in 1897. Kennedy & Farmer speculate that the stories were probably collected from the 'Boy's Own Annual' and Blackie books, and might have been pirated. This is quite possible, as there are numerous other American editions of this title, and pirating of Henty's stories was quite common around the turn of the century. This edition was certainly not published before 1902, as that is the year in which Burt incoporated (see Thompson, 'The Boys' Dumas, p. 43). Our copy is blocked on the front board in red and black, with an image of a kneeling soldier firing a rifle at three soldiers peeking over a hill. The spine is lettered in silver. The book is bound in olive cloth and the boards are bumped at the tips, and rubbed along the edges, with light general soiling. The plain endpapers are a bit soiled, and there is an early signature on the front free endpaper. The front hinge is cracking; the rear hinge is tight. The quality of the paper on which the text was printed was inferior and it has predictably darkened a bit with age, but is otherwise clean. Overall, a good copy. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations.

The Cornet of Horse a Tale of Marlborough's Wars
Chicago, IL, M. A. Donohue & Co. ND. Hardcover. pp. 363, ads.Small 8vo,,,This title was first published in book form by Sampson Low, Marston et al in 1881, and was one of Henty's earliest works (and one of the few juveniles not to be published by Blackies). There is no clear priority amongst American editions (see Kennedy & Farmer, p. 15; Newbolt 8), although the printing by Burt was probably one of the early ones (see Thompson, 'The Boys' Dumas', p. 43). This title was also published by Hurst and Co. and F. M. Lupton (both of New York City), Patterson and White of Philadelphia, and Donahue of Chicago. Our copy is lettered in black with a full colour pastedown on the front board of a maritime battle on board a ship. Crosed rifle and anchor design to spine. Bound in tan/beige cloth with plain endpapers and gift inscription on front free endpaper. The illustrations are of a very poor quality (in terms of the quality of reproduction). Light wear to boards with a bit of soiling. Contents clean and tight. A good plus copy. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations.

This American edition, by Burt, is undated, but was certainly published no earlier than 1902, when Burt incorporated (see Thompson, 'The Boys' Dumas, p. 43). No priority amongst American editions appears to have been established (see Kennedy & Farmer, p. 15; Newbolt 8), although this printing by Burt was probably one of the early ones.
