 CHAMBERS, THOMAS,, William Hogarth
CHAMBERS, THOMAS,
William Hogarth
Portrait of William Hogarth (London 1697-1764), a famous English painter, engraver, satirist and social critic. His work includes realistic portraits but also many comic-like series of pictures, and he is perhaps best known for his series A Harlot's Progress and A Rake's Progress. Here he is portrayed in an oval, with his dog in front, as well as a few books, a burin and a palette. Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 225 x 164 mm., platemark 173 x 133 mm. Engraved by Thomas Chambers after Hogarth's self-portrait (here noted as 'Seipse pinxit'). The page number in the top right corner suggests this was used as a book illustration. We have not established which publication this print was used in. Thomas Chambers (also Chambars, London 1724-1789) was an English (reproductive) engraver of Irish descent. He ended his own life by drowning himself in the Thames, spurred on by financial issues. In good condition, but faintly foxed throughout.
