Full-length portrait of Saint Suitbert of Kaiserswerth (died 713), an English missionary who accompanied Willibrord. Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 298 x 466 mm., attached to carrier 397 x 563 mm., engraved by Frederik Bloemaert (1614-1690) after Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651). Published c. 1635-1650 in a series of portraits of prelates and bishops. In very good condition, cropped within platemark, a horizontal crease over the middle of the sheet. Friedrich Wilhelm Bollinger (1777-1825) was a German engraver born and active in Berlin. In good condition, a few spots in the margins. The image area clean and crisp.

Lithograph by Cäcilie Brandt, printed by August Kneisel, c. 1829-1855. Cäcilie Brandt (Lepizig 1814-1852) was a German draftsperson and lithographer. In the mid-19th centrury she is counted among the outstanding artists of Leipzig. Her portraits in particular are regarded as the best of her time. Photographic reproduction of a painted portrait of Franz Seraphicus Grillparzer. Grillparzer (1791-1872) was an Austrian author, considered to be the leading Austrian dramatist of the 19th century. His plays were and are frequently performed at the famous Burgtheater in Vienna. He also wrote the oration for Ludwig van Beethoven's funeral, as well as the epitaph for his friend Franz Schubert (source: Wikipedia). Albumen print on thick card, cabinet card, size 171 x 113 mm., photograph size 130 x 98 mm. Photograph by Friedrich Bruckmann, after the painting by Eugen Felix. Published by Friedrich Bruckmann's Verlag (Munich, Berlin & London), c. 1880. Friedrich Bruckmann (1814-1898) was a German publisher and photographer who specialized in artistic photography. Eugen Felix (1836-1906) was an Austrian painter. He started his studies with Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller and continued in Paris with Léon Cogniet. Felix is particularly well known for his portraits, but he also painted mythological and historical scenes. In good condition, a small crease in the lower left of the photograph. Scattered silvery spots (the natural aging of this photographic medium).

Copy in lithography by Theodor Brüggemann (1822-1888) after the engraved portrait by J. van Campen after Cornelis Koning. In good condition, a dampstain in the lower right corner, and some foxing in the top right margin corner. Laurens Janszoon Coster, Coster also spelled Koster, (born c. 1370, Netherlands-died 1440?, Haarlem?), Dutch rival of Johannes Gutenberg as the alleged inventor of printing.Little is known of this early printer, whose last name means “sacristan,” his title as an official of the Great Church of Haarlem. He is mentioned several times in records between 1417 and 1434 as alderman, tax assessor, and treasurer and is presumed to have died in a plague that struck Haarlem in 1440, when his wife is recorded as a widow.

In the border grotesques with various scenes such as the judgment of Solomon and a representation of the devout monarch, unaffected by death and destruction. Plate from series of four designs for tazzas, with a medallion within a wide border with figures, animals and vines on a dark ground. The border around the medallion and the outer edge include Dutch and French verses.
