Portrait of Marie-Thérèse, Duchess of Angoulême
Marie-Thérčse Charlotte (1778-1851) was the eldest child of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette of France. In 1799 she married her cousin Louis Antoine, Duke of Angoulźme, thus becoming the Duchess of Angoulźme. She was briefly disputed Queen of France in 1830. Engraving on laid paper, sheet size 328 x 436 mm., platemark 307 x 423 mm. Engraved by Louis Audouin (1768-1822) after Franēois Dumont (1751-1831) and printed by Durand. In fair condition, a red stain in the lower right corner, lower edge soiled, a few spots in the top edge as well as in the top edge of the image. Creases in the image area, and a small tear in the right margin.

Half length portrait of an old woman, likely Dou's wife at an old age, seated on a chair, turned towards the right. In an oval. Signed within oval on the right: 'GDou. 1638' (GD monogrammed). Lettered at the bottom: 'From a Drawing of G.d Dou, in / the Collection of W.m Baillie Esq.r'. In old handwriting at the bottom in brown ink: 'Het origineel v. tekening is van deze grooten 16. Octob. 1759 uit de versameling van syb. Fijtama is verkogt voor f. 299-'. Signed also on the bottom of the frame to the right: 'WBaillie f', dated on the bottom left: '17 March 1775'. Portrait of Cornet Daniel Brown, whole-length standing facing towards the viewer, looking to left, in uniform and tricorn, right hand on hip above sword-hilt, left hand holding a staff, with a cavalry skirmish in the background. Lettered above the image "Spectamur Agendo", with the engraver's monogram and date 1769, and below the image with a Greek inscription and the information in Italian that the print was drawn and engraved in four hours by Baillie, captain of the 3rd light horse regiment: "?? µ?? ??f?e?e / Delineato & inciso in Quatr'Ore WBaillie Capt. di 3d. Rego Caval Legiera". The Greek transliterates as 'Il mio Alfiere', or 'my flag-bearer'. l Etching and drypoint on paper with tiny margins; plate mark 150 x 75 mm, total: 158 x 82 mm; in very good condition, bottom left corner slightly damaged but not affecting the plate; Le Blanc 92.

Engraved by Karl Barth after Moritz Daniel Oppenheim. Published by Biblioghraphisches Institut, Hildburghausen, in 'Conversations-Lexikon für die gebildeten Stände', first published 1840-1855. Karl Barth (Eisfeld 1787-1858 Kassel) was a German author, illustrator, engraver and painter. Moritz Daniel Oppenheim (Hanau 1800-1882 Frankfurt am Main) was a German lithographer, etcher and painter. In good condition, with a faint dampstain in the top half of the sheet. Some discolouration in the lower third of the sheet.

Engraving by Johann Friedrich Bause after Anton Graff, and published by Bause in Leipzig, dated 1778. Johann Friedrich Bause (Halle 1738-1814 Weimar) was a German engraver of primarily portraits. Anton Graff (Winterthur 1736-1813 Dresden) was an eminent Swiss portrait artist. In good condition, some foxing around the platemark. A stain in the lower margin, a small crease in the right margin. Dutch lady with a coin
Mezzotint on laid paper, by Thomas Blackmore after Jacob Backer (formerly attributed to Frans Hals), ca. 1770. Sheet size 264 x 203 mm., cropped within platemark (with loss of image and caption on both sides), top edge cropped in an oval. Thomas Blackmore was born in London around 1740 and died around 1780. He does not seem to have been active for a long time; the dates on his prints range from 1769 to 1771. He mainly engraved portraits, of figures such as Sir Joshua Reynolds and Samuel Foote.

Portrait of Franēois Guizot. Franēois Pierre Guillaume Guizot (1787-1874) was a French historian, orator, and statesman. Guizot was a dominant figure in French politics prior to the Revolution of 1848. Steel engraving on wove paper, sheet size 274 x 176 mm., platemark 224 x 151 mm. Engraved by Charles Blanc, after the drawing made by Calamatta, based on P. Delaroche's painting. Published in: Cormenin, Louis-Marie de Lahaye. Livre des orateurs. Parijs: L.A. Pagnerre, 1842. Charles Blanc (Castres 1813-1882 Paris) was an art critic, art theorist, printmaker and director of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Luigi Calamatta (Civitavecchia 1801/02-1869 Milan) was an Italian lithographer, (reproductive) engraver, draftsperson and academy director. He took part in the July Revolution and the French Revolution of 1848. Paul Delaroche (Paris 1797-1856) was a French painter, sculptor and fresco artist. In very good condition, some small stains in the lower margin.
