 CHAPONNIER, ALEXANDRE,, Prélude de Nina
CHAPONNIER, ALEXANDRE,
Prélude de Nina
A romantic couple in a music room. The woman is seated on the bench at the piano (or harpsichord), holding a violin. The man leans over to kiss her, with his fingers on the board of the piano. A guitar leans against a stool on the left, on which rolls of sheet music lay. Engraving and stipple engraving on laid paper. Sheet size 390 x 315 mm., attached to carrier sheet (538 x 388 mm.). Engraving by Alexandre Chaponnier, after a painting by Louis-Léopold Boilly. Produced c. 1790 (as the captions are cropped off, it is unclear which exact edition of the print this is). Alexandre Chaponnier (Geneva 1753 - 1805 Paris) was a Swiss-French engraver. Louis-Léopold Boilly (La Bassée 1761 - 1845 Paris) was a French painter and draftsperson. He produced popular portrait paintings, as well as a large number of genre paintings documenting middle-class social life in France. In fair condition. Cropped within platemark, and attached to the carrier sheet by all edges. This has caused some creases and wrinkles in the image edge. Some general surface soiling, and a tear in the lower right edge of the sheet.
