The caption is the original title of Whistler's portrait: 'Portrait de ma mère'. Portrait of the mother of painter James McNeill Whistler. The lady is seated in an interior, wearing a stern black dress and white lace headdress. Her hands are folded in her lap while her feet rest on a stove. Etching and plate tone in brown on laid paper with watermark M.B.M., sheet size 187 x 278 mm., platemark 168 x 198 mm. Signed by Henri-Charles Guérard in the plate. Made by Guérard after the painting by James McNeill Whistler exhibited at the Salon de 1883, and published in the famous Parisian periodical 'Gazette des Beaux-Arts', printed by Eudes, c. 1887-1888.Henri-Charles Guérard (Paris 1847-1897) was a French illustrator and engraver. In very good condition, in matting. The right and lower margin edges browned.
