Portrait of Frederik de Vries
Portrait of Frederik de Vries as young boy playing with Goltzius' dog. Frederik was the son of the painter Dirck de Vries, a pupil of Goltzius. The boy is trying to get on the back of the dog while holding a bird in his hand. On the cartouche below some text in Latin. The text on the bottom is about a boy and a dog. Anonymous copy in reverse with mention of the artist and the publisher, 'HGoltzius invent' and Claes Jansz. Visscher 'CIVisscher excudebat' (CVI monogrammed). On the verso collector's mark of C. Etching on laid paper, by Ernst Willem Jan Bagelaar, probably after his own design, executed ca. 1815-1820, platemark 104 x 118 mm., sheet size 137 x 213 mm. Although Bagelaar (1775-1837) was originally an army man, he soon turned to a life of art after instructing himself in etching, basing many of the etchings on his own designs. Three long-horned goats in a landscape. Etching on laid paper, by Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem (1620-1683) after their own design, and published by Huquier. Sheet size 135 x 125 mm., platemark 114 x 102 mm. This print bears number 5 (of a series of 8: 'Animalia ad vivum delineata et aqua forti aeri impressa Studio et Arte Nicolai Berchemi', also known as 'Le cahier à l'homme assis sous les arbres'). In good condition, the margins lightly soiled, a dampstain in the top right and right margin (minimally affecting the image area). Berchem (1620-1683) after their own design, and possibly published by Theodor Matham (if this is the third state; without the series title it cannot be distinguished from the second state). Sheet size 120 x 105 mm., platemark 112 x 98 mm. This print is number 6 of a series of 8: 'Animalia ad vivum delineata et aqua forti aeri impressa Studio et Arte Nicolai Berchemi', also known as 'Le cahier à l'homme assis sous les arbres'.
