BLACKWOOD, GARY
The Great Race - the Amazing Round -the -World Auto Race of 1908
New York, Harry N. Abrams. 2008, First Edition. (ISBN: 0810994895). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy in pictorial laminated boards with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. Gathering the research materials was a painstaking process spread over a ten year period. The idea of making a trip around the world was an extraordinary one in 1908, when six automobiles from four countries set out to be the first car to travel from New York to Paris. The race was headline news for months, and readers eagerly followed the progress. The competitors were an eccentric bunch and included an ambitious German army officer who was good at everything but driving, a young Italian poet, a Norwegian explorer who claimed to have sailed a Viking ship across the Atlantic, a roguish Frenchman who left debts everywhere he went, and a quiet American car expert who rarely smiled but could keep a cranky machine running when no one else could. The roads were terrible and the shelters flea-ridden, and the food on the journey was often whatever the contestants could shoot, but everywhere they were greeted by cheering crowds, many of which had never seen a car before. Photograph illustrations. 23. Fine/Fine.

BLOFELD, HENRY
The Packer Affair
London, Collins. 1978, First Edition. (ISBN: 0002166542). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy with dustjacket which is also near Fine. The 'Packer Affair' burst upon the world on 9th May, 1977 and has been headline news ever since with no cricket story has lasted as long nor had such repercussions. The Bodyline row of the 1930's seems small be comparison, the d'Oliveira crisis of the 1960's short lived. Henry Blofeld, one of the finest cricket writers and commentators, was given exclusive interviews with both Packer and deposed England captain, Tony Greig, covered the story all summer for the Guardian and was the only correspondent to see both the Packer Tests in Australia, where he was commentator for the BBC, the Australian Test series, MCC play first Pakistan and then New Zealand, and finally the young Australian side take on the 'Packer' filled West Indies. 13 photographs. DARWIN, BERNARD
Historic Golf Courses of the British Isles
London, Duckworth. 1987, First Thus. (ISBN: 0715621734). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Very Good+ unmarked copy which has a small bump to one corner tip with VG+ price clipped dustjacket which has a very small repaired closed tear. Introduced by Barry Took and Peter Alliss. Written by one of the greatest of all writers on golf, Bernard Darwin's classic description of the golf courses of the British Isles, first published in 1910, dropped from sight and lurked unnoticed for 80 years. It now emerges in a new edition as fresh, fascinating and full of golfing wisdom as when it was first penned. It provides not only a hole by hole description of many Great Britain and Ireland's leading courses but an intriguing evocation of the time when the 'gutty' was being replaced by the rubber cored golfball. An amusing and scholarly introduction by Barry Took and Peter Alliss sets the scene. 23 plates. 22. Very Good/Very Good.
