AMIN, SAMIR
Ending the Crisis of Capitalism or Ending Capitalism?
Cape Town, Pambazuka Press. 2011, First Edition. (ISBN: 9781906387808). Soft Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy. 199 pages. With his usual verve and sharpness Samir Amin examines the factors that brought about the 2008 financial collapse and explores the systemic crisis of capitalism after two decades of neoliberal globalisation. He lays bare the relationship between dominating oligopolies and the globalisation of the world economy. The current crisis, he argues, is a profound crisis of the capitalist system itself, bringing forward an era in which wars, and perhaps revolutions, will once again shake the world. 51. BAKER, C. EDWIN
Human Liberty and Freedom of Speech
New York, Oxford University Press. 1992. (ISBN: 0195079027). Soft Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a small crease to one corner tip) with no inscriptions. viii + 385 pages. The author develops a liberty theory of freedom of speech, disputing the dominant 'marketplace of ideas' theory of the First Amendment that maintains that the truth will be discovered through debate free from government interference. Baker's theory denies constitutional protection to commercial speech, yet calls for increased protection for a free press, as well as protection for a considerable range of value-based expressive action. These protective activities, Professor Baker maintains, are crucial for a process of non-violent, progressive change. Presenting a timely and cogent argument deeply rooted in Supreme Court decisions and American political history. 51. Near Fine/No Jacket.

CHOMSKY, NOAM
Hegemony or Survival - America's Quest for Global Dominance
London, Hamish Hamilton. 2003, First Edition. (ISBN: 0241142504). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. First UK edition, First printing. 278 pages. The United States is in the process of staking out not just the globe, but the last unarmed spot in our neighbourhood - the skies - as a militarized sphere of influence. Our earth and its skies are, for the Bush administration, the final frontiers of imperial control. In this book Noam Chomsky explains how we came to this moment, what kind of peril we find ourselves in, and why our rulers are willing to jeopardize the future of our species. Chomsky dissects America's quest for global supremacy, tracking the US government's aggressive pursuit of policies intended to achieve 'full spectrum dominance' at any cost. 14. Fine/Fine.

CHOMSKY, NOAM
World Orders, Old and New - with a New Epilogue
London, Pluto Press. 1997. (ISBN: 0745313205). Soft Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy. 343 pages. In this widely acclaimed study of global politics, Noam Chomsky offers a devastating critique of conventional definitions of the 'new world order'. It is, he argues, nothing more than an ingenious piece of 'historical engineering', wherby the pretexts for the Cold War - nuclear threat, Eastern Bloc menace - have been deftly replaced by a new set of convenient justifications for a Western agenda that remains largely unchanged. He draws together a wealth of historical detail in support of his argument, demonstrating with awesome clarity that the basic rules of world order remain as they always hve been. The book has been updated to include coverage of the latest developments in the Middle East peace process. 3. Fine/No Jacket.
