Brandt is regarded as one of the most eminent and influential of contemporary moral philosophers and his work has been concerned with how to justify what is good or right, not by reliance on intuitions or theories about what moral words mean but by the explanation of moral psychology and the description of what it is to value something, or to think it immoral. BROWN, STUART C.
Do Religious Claims Make Sense?
London, SCM Press. 1969, First Edition. (ISBN: 0334000904). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. Uniform with the Library of Philosophy and Theology Series. Religious claims seem to be becoming increasingly problematical, and it is not simply that many find them to be untrue, rather they seem to hover on the verge of meaninglessness. The words are familiar, but the uses to which they are put are often baffling, and there is an apparent 'intelligibility gap' between the believer and unbeliever. This intelligibility gap forms the starting point for Dr. Brown's original and highly important study, and in the course of the book he examines attitudes towards it taken up by many recent philosophers and theologians, and the explanations they give. NOT EX LIB R1. Fine/Very Good.

CHARME, STUART L.
Meaning and Myth in the Study of Lives - a Sartrean Perspective
Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania Press. 1984, First Edition. (ISBN: 0812279085). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a bump to spine head) with dustjacket which has a small tear to back.vii + 190 pages. The book explores major theoretical issues in the study of an individual life through its focus on Jean-Paul Sartre. Sartre's quest for an 'existential psychoanalysis' led him to develop what he called 'true novels' in the landmark studies of Flaubert and others. In clarifying Sartre's philosophical ideas in relation to the analysis of the self, Charmé examines the attraction/repulsion of Freudian concepts and explores parallels in Erikson's ego psychology. Certain 'mythic' qualities in religious biography and autobiography are seen as central to Sartre, who presents lives - including his own - as normative models. 24. Near Fine/Very Good.

FRANCIS, CLAUDE AND GONTIER, FERNANDE
Simone de Beauvoir
London, Sidgwick and Jackson. 1987, First Edition. (ISBN: 028399391X). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a small light mark to top edge) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xv + 412 Pages. 18 illustrations. Simone Lucie Ernestine Marie Bertrand de Beauvoir, called Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986), dominated not only the French intelligentsia, but feminist thinking throughout the world for over fifty years. The paradox this presents in the context of her tireless devotion to Jean-Paul Sartre is only one of many confronted here in her first full-scale biography. The range of her work as a writer is enormous, but she may, however, be best known for her relaionship with Sartre. Despite the intensity of their shared passion - physical, political and intellectual - 'the beaver' and the great existentialist never committed themselves to marriage. She was with him when he died, but her importance to him was far more than that of a muse and a support. Indeed de Beauvoir conducted a long and mutually inspirational affair with the American writer and Nobel Prizewinner, Nelson Algren (in accordance with what Sartre descibed as 'contingent relationships). An unpublished correspondence of 1,682 letters betwee those two has been released to the authors of this book. They reveal as much about de Beauvoir and her friends - Camus, Picasso, Genet and Giacometti, as well as Sartre - as they do of a profoundly sensual relationship. FERRE, FREDERICK
Language, Logic and God
London, Eyre & Spottiswoode and the Book Society. 1962, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. The book provides a clear and full introduction to some of the most important philosophical developments of the last quarter century, and presents a substantial defence of religious thought against positivist crtics. The rise of logical positivist philosophy and its later developments in linguistic analysis produced a radical criticism of theology. Dr. Ferre begins by giving an account of positivist and linguistic philosophy, its terms, methods, ideas and history, then, within the framework, he considers the position of theology and argues that it has a real claim to objective, not merely poetic truth. GOGARTEN, FRIEDRICH
Christ the Crisis
London, SCM Press. 1970, First Edition. (ISBN: 0334001749). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine very clean, tight and unmarked copy which has a little foxing to top edge with near Fine dustjacket. Translated from the German by R.A. Wilson. Uniform with the Library of Philosophy and Theology Series. Friedrich Gogarten, who died in 1967, was one of a most distinguished generation of German philosophers and theologians which included, among others, Karl Barth, Rudolf Bultmann, Paul Tillich and Karl Jaspers. This was his last full length book, published in his eightieth year, and represents a summary of his life's work in philosophy, systematic theology and exegesis, centring on the two questions which still occupy Christians as they always have done: 'Who was the man Jesus?', and 'Who is Christ for us today?'. The writings of the most important German theologians, Althaus, Bultmann, Kasemann, Bornkamm, Fuchs, Ebeling, are discussed, but the importance of the book is Gogarten's own contribution. NOT EX LIB R1. Very Good/Very Good.

HAVARDI, JEREMY
Falling to Pieces - Making Sense of Self-Deception and the Divided Mind
Lewes, East Sussex, The Book Guild. 2004, First Edition. (ISBN: 1857768353). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine complete dustjacket. A rigorous work of philosophy which takes as its subject one of the most common forms of irrational behaviour in human beings. Self-deception has been much written about from a philosophical point of view, but, according to the author, has never been adequately explained or rebutted. Through cogent analysis of key texts, he demonstrates why so many previous attempts to dismiss the notion of self-deception as being ontologically impossible fall short of explaining away a form of irrationality that is familiar to most of us. He also considers the significance of Freud's theories for the phenomenon, where psychology might appear to be the most obvious tool for explaining it. 1. Fine/Fine.

LAIRD, JOHN
Philosophical Incursions Into Literature
Cambridge, Cambridge University Press. 1946, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Paper title label on blue cloth boards which are very clean and unmarked with no wear. Internally there is a small contemporary label with name and date to front pastedown else clean, tight and unmarked. A Very Good+ copy. Dustjacket is also VG+ with age darkening to spine and is not price clipped. Also loosely included is the original receipt of January 16, 1947. The late John Laird, Professor of Moral Philosophy in the University of Aberdeen, chose for the purpose of this book to read certain renowned works of English Literature with a professional eye upon the philosophy of the authors, as far as that could be deduced from the book in hand. Some of his chosen authors can be said to have invited this approach - Bridges, Shelley, Pope for instance, and possibly Hardy. But others - Dickens, Browning, Sterne, for example - scarcely expected, while they were writing, to be closely questioned in a matter in which they were often so vague. Wordsworth, perhaps, was not unwilling, and Isaac Watts might have had arguments to advance; but how would Shakespeare receive the question? Laird, in his first essay seeks to uncover Shakespeare's attitude to war and government, in another essay he analyses Robinson Crusoe's primitive philosophy, whilst with Sterne his search for a philosophy goes almost unrewarded. MILLER, DAVID L.
Individualism - Personal Achievement and the Open Society
Austin, Texas, University of Texas Press. 1967, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a name written on top edge) with VG dustjacket which has a little edge wear. 213 pages. In this age of the 'organization' man, thoughtful people may become discouraged as to the opportunity for individualism in our society. Professor Miller's study indicates cause for intelligent, logically based hope that the individualist has a bright future in democratic societies. Miller repudiates the mechanistic account of the human personality. He denies that the individual has no control over the forces operating on him and no power to direct his own destiny, and he explains that the uncritical acceptance of scientific methodology by social scientists has resulted in a one-sided view of the individual in society.
