NICOLSON, ADAM AND MORTER, PETER
Prospects of England - Two Thousand Years Seen Through Twelve English Towns
London, Weidenfeld and Nicolson. 1989, First Edition. (ISBN: 0297795783). Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. A large format volume of 160 pages. Travelling together, author Adam Nicolson and illustrator Peter Morter have visited twelve small towns across the breadth of England, from Weymouth on the South coast to Alnwick, almost on the borders of Scotland. Each of these towns 'has enjoyed a moment when it has come into its own, when the forces at work have brought something to fruition and have given the place its enduring personality'. These 'shaping moments' - a different point in history for each successive town - are strung together in the book to form a continuous chain of town life from the planning of Roman Chichester to the radically nostalgic ideals of the Garden City in early 20th century Letchworth. The result is a remarkable portrait of small town England, with the triumphs of provincial architecture, rich with the details of everyday life, both now and in the past, lavishly illustrated with detailed plans and architectural drawings. The towns are Chichester, Sussex; Glastonbury, Somerset; Alnwick, Northumberland; Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire; Woodbridge, Suffolk; Blandford Forum, Dorset; Monmouth, Gwent; Weymouth, Dorset; Buxton, Derbyshire; Whitby, North Yorkshire; Hebden Bridgem West Yorkshire; Letchworth, Hertfordshire. ADBURGHAM, ALISON
Shopping in Style - London from the Restoration to Edwardian Elegance
London, Thames and Hudson. 1979, First Edition. (ISBN: 0500012059). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from slight age toning to page edges) with near Fine dustjacket (Fine apart from a hint of wear to lower front edge) which is not price clipped. 192 pages. 174 illustrations. In the two centuries since Adam Smith described England as a nation of shopkeepers, there have been many analyses of the importance of retail trade to the wealth of the nation. Yet few writers have explored the part played by shops and shopping in the everyday life of all the citizens of England's capital city, from poorest to richest. This book is a history of retailing in which trade statistics have given way to a many sided story of shopkeepers and shopworkers, shopping customs and customers. A fully illustrated social history which follows the topographical development of London and its shops from the Restoration to the period before the First World War. NOT EX LIB 24. ASLET, CLIVE
The Story of Greenwich
London, Fourth Estate. 1999, First Edition. (ISBN: 1857028252). Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. A large format volume of 288 pages. Greenwich has been an emblem of British history for over a thousand years. A seat of learning and intellectual enquiry, exploration and discovery, it resonates with echoes of great characters and stirring national events. The Royal Observatory, constructed in Greenwich Park in the 1670's, has been the origin of standard time around the world. The ancient royal palace was the birthplace of three monarchs: Henry VIII, Mary Tudor and Elizabeth I. Blackheath , at the top of the park, has often featured as the scene of insurrection and revolt, and it was here that Wat Tyler assembled his band of a hundred thousand rebels against the Poll Tax. Lord Nelson's body was brought to the Royal Naval Hospital in 1805 after his death at Trafalgar, and the 17th and 18th centuries bestowed upon Greenwich an incomparable parade of great and innovative buildings by Inigo Jones, Wren, Hawksmoor and Vanbrugh. It was a favourite haunt of Dickens and Gladstone, and home to London's first railway. Using beautiful colour illustrations throughout, the author presents a beguiling and charismatic portrait. BRAGG, MELVYN
The Adventure of English - 500 Ad to 2000 - the Biography of a Language
London, Hodder and Stoughton. 2003, First Edition. (ISBN: 0340829915). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. Along the way its colourful story takes in a host of characters and locations, from the early tribes, Alfred the Great's stubborn resistance to the Danes, and through its early literary masterpieces such as Beowulf and the bawdy Geoffrey Chaucer; Henry VIII's battles with the church over bootleg bibles; a 'coarse' playwright named William Shakespeare; Dr. Johnson's dictionary. Embracing elements of Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi and Gullah, this 1500 year story covers a huge range of countries and peoples. 2. Fine/Fine.

DENING, GREG
Mr Bligh's Bad Language - Passion, Power and Theatre on the Bounty
New York, Cambridge University Press. 1992, First Edition. (ISBN: 0521383706). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. xii + 445 pages. 45 illustrations. Captain Bligh and the voyage of the Bounty are the starting point of this new study of the famous mutiny in history, literature and film. By juxtaposing an account of the mutiny with an analysis of its evolving place in history and culture, it offers a new interpretation of the mutiny in the context of its historic and cultural representations. Beginning with an anlysis of naval life and ritual abord the Bounty, the author argues that the mutiny did not take place due to punitive violence , as Captain Bligh is shown to be one of the least violent of British Navy captains. Instead, he argues, Bligh misunderstood the theatrical nature of shipboard life, especially his role as captain. Moving to a larger stage, the book shifts to the reception of the mutiny in 18th century England. Connecting the voyage of the Bounty with the cultural exploration and revolutions of the age, Dening shows that a mythology arose almost immediately around the participants of the mutiny and their actions, a mythology that has been continually reinterpreted into 20th century literature and film. 310. FLANDERS, JUDITH
The Victorian House - Domestic Life from Childbirth to Deathbed
London, Harper Collins. 2003, First Edition. (ISBN: 0007131887). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. lii + 476 pages. 36 main illustrations and 55 illustrations in the text. Coloured pictorial endpapers. The Victorian age is both recent and unimaginably distant. In the most prosperous and technologically advanced nation in the world, people carried slops up and down stairs; buried meat in fresh earth to prevent mould forming; wrung sheets out in boiling water with their bare hands. This drudgery was routinely performed by the parents of people still living. Running water, stoves, flush toilets - even toilet paper - arrived slowly throughout the century; and most were luxuries available only to the prosperous. An incisive portrait of Victorian domestic, life portrayed through a collage of diaries, letters, advice books, magazines and paintings, the author shows how social history is built up of tiny domestic details. Laid out like a house, following the story of daily life from room to room. NOT EX LIB A HEAVY VOLUME OF 0.885 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST L. Fine/Fine.

A Domestic History of the Bank of England 1930-1960
Cambridge, Cambridge University Press. 1992, First Edition. (ISBN: 0521391407). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy in red cloth boards with near Fine dustjacket. xv + 449 pages. 8 colour and 51 black and white illustrations. This book, which is based on the Bank of England's own mainly unpublished archives, describes the internal workings of the Bank from 1930 to 1960 under three Governors, Lord Norman, Lord Catto and Lord Cobbold. It contains much hitherto private information on the Bank's accounting methods and profitability, and on the note issue including bank note design. These decades were a period of enormous change, when its working methods (many dating back to its foundation in 1694) were radically updated and in some cases mechanised in a progression from handwritten ledgers to computers. New functions such as exchange control were put in place, help was given to many newly developed countries in setting up their own central banks, and many new buildings were erected. God's Secret Agents - Queen Elizabeth's Forbidden Priests and the Hatching of the Gunpowder Plot

A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped.vii + 445 pages. 40 illustrations. As darkness fell on the evening of Friday, 28 October 1588, just weeks after the defeat of the Spanish Armada, two young Englishmen landed in secret on a Norfolk beach - they were Jesuit priests - and their aim was to achieve by force of argument what the Armada had failed to do by force of arms - return England to the Catholic Church. Eighteen years later their mission had been shattered by the actions of a small group of terrorists, the Gunpowder Plotters; they themselves had been accused of designing 'that most horrid and hellish conspiracy'; and the future of every Catholic they had come to save depended on the silence of an Oxford joiner, builder of priest-holes, being tortured in the Tower of London. Using contemporary documents, the book pieces together a deadly game of cat-and-mouse as Elizabeth and her ministers fought to defend the State and English Catholics struggled to defend their souls, and follows the priests - God's Secret Agents - from their schooling on the Continent, through their perilous return journeys and lonely lives in hiding, to their gruesome deaths on the scaffold. The Force of Persuasion - the Story of the Police Federation
Surrey, The Police Federation. 1994, First Edition. (ISBN: 0901786047). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is complete with separate 8 page index. 506 pages. 39 illustrations. Just weeks after the First World War ended, the British establishment was rocked by a sudden police strike in London, when almost every constable and sergeant in the Metropolitan Police refused to go on duty. They were demanding a big pay increase; a widows' pension; the recognition of their illegal trade union, and the reinstatement of comrades who had been sacked for their union activities. The Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, gave in to the the strikers on pay, but within months the Police Union smashed and the Police Federation of England and Wales was established to represent the interests of every policeman below the rank of Superintendent. Strikes were outlawed, and the new organisation was denied the right to collect subscriptions. The book tells the story of those early years, and traces the growth of the body to the present. A HEAVY VOLUME OF 1.06 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST 310. Fine/Fine.
